New 55gal tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
where does the pre-filter go? (i know stupid question) on the intake tube??

I've got two AquaClear 50s on one of my tanks(smaller brother to the AC70), and I found some pre-filters to put on the intake tubes at a LFS in Indianapolis... Think they were Aqueon brand, but they fit perfect. I did put a rubberband around the top of each one just to be certain they didn't fall off, but don't think I really would have needed it.

Word to the wise, from one of my other threads... DON'T wring the pre-filter out in the tank! Lol. Those little sponges hold a LOT of schmutz... I learned the hard way last weekend...

you won't need the prefilters for gravel...but...if you want to try them ,they will certainly benefit you in having to clean the internal sponges a lot less often, thus mantaining healthy bacteria will be easier .. but ,,you can accomplish basicly the same thing by ordering extra internal sponges(1 for each filter) stacking them inside the filter ,with your biomax on top then cleaning just the bottom sponge with each water change, and the top sponge (alternating filters )once a month or so....... you will get a feel for what works best for you soon ... by the way those sponges will last for YEARS,, AND THE BIO IS GOOD FOREVER, don't throw them out....aquaclear , for sales purposes says they have a limited lifespan .. it's not really true

I run 2 AC50's on my 55g and I wasn't getting the water clarity I wanted (mostly because I only do water changes once a month) so I ordered some micron filter felt from drsfosterandsmith.com and cut a rectangle to fit between my second sponge and the bio-max. Best idea ever! Water is crystal clear. Only downside is you have to clean it every couple of days or it starts to clog. Which is easy to do, just take them to the sink and spray then out with the spray nossle. Takes 3 minutes from start to finish. uploadfromtaptalk1381255565440.jpguploadfromtaptalk1381255682679.jpg
