New 55gal tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been doing some looking at the AQ 70 and they have really good reviews!!! I don't care what type of filter i have just as long as it works! The aqua clear 70 looks really easy to use and there is a way less chance of coming home to water on the floor! (IMO) and I can buy two for the price of 1 canister!

What would be the down fall/ bad things to a HOB filter???

IMO .. THAT is the best filter for a 55 ,,, you run 2 of them,, double up the internal sponges and run the bio-max inside also(you can leave out the carbon , save it for removing meds),, that way you can clean a sponge or two every water change...and they really do last.. I Am running 4 of them on different tanks now .. and those tanks are the best looking tanks I have, water clarity wise... and yep, that xp3 is really broken:( one thing though.. make sure to order A COUPLE pre -filter sponges( they are only a couple of bucks) ,, ac 70's don't do well with sand in the filter,, they can get noisy when sand hits that impeller

where does the pre-filter go? (i know stupid question) on the intake tube??

yep.. you can even order extra ac 70 sponges , nip holes in them and use as pre filters.. but I will look on AMAZON and see if they have some that might work:)

instant ocean aquarium system a109filt0 maxi-jet(on amazon) ,LOOKS LIKE IT WILL WORK, hard to tell for sure.. and it comes in PKG. OF 2. if you dont want to chance it you could order 4 generic ac70 sponges use 2 inside the filters and hollow the middle of 2 to use as pre filters

Well I have also been toying around with going to gravel!! I know I just put sand in there but sounds like gravel will be more better in the long run!!! So I was thinking of tan colored pea gravel??? and it wouldnt get sucked up in the filter and I will like the looks much better!!

wont hurt. Natural pea gravel ,, about 1" deep looks good to me , and is easy to clean... the one thing about pea gravel....and every substrate has pro's and con's, if you get it too deep it really can hold a lot of poop, a thin layer is always MUCH easier to clean .. sand will work ok too..it's just safer to use pre filters:) tan pea gravel would look nice ,too

Thank you for baring with me! Got a lot of options and questions! You are really helping me out!!!

glad to do it.. wish I HAD somebody to bounce ideas off of when I started On my 1st BIG tank adventure,,, it can suck when you find out later you coulda done a nicer set-up for half the money, and nobody at the local fish store is going to tell you what your best saving options are
