New 90 gallon tank stocking!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Stand and filter arrived. I’m not sure how to move Sparky over. Also, I probably need a beefier heater to deal with 90g. This whole thing will probably take atleast an hour. Do I need to heat a 5G bucket for sparky? Can I plop him in my 29g community tank in A net, or would that be too stressful? How do I do this lol.

You can keep him in a bucket while getting ready. Water won’t get that cold that fast. Put a cover on though. Definitely don’t advise letting him near your 29 fish, even through a net lol.

I can give you some tips based on how I moved my fish to their 475 liter. These are in chronological order.

-Ensure the tank you are moving the fish to is clean.
-Ensure you have the extra filters and heaters needed for a larger tank (as an example, I upgraded from 240 L to 473 L. So I got a new filter and heater of equal capacity to the exisiting ones. Your situation may differ depending on how big Sparky's tank was compared to the 341 liter).
-Fill the new tank with dechlorinated and brought to temperature water, but leave room for as much old tank water as you can except 1 bucket or so.
-Once the new tank is full, place Sparky in the reserved tank water bucket and move over the old filter and heater. Set up the new ones right after that, and transfer all decor too.
-Either bag Sparky from the bucket, or (only if you live close to the pet store) get him bagged.
-Acclimate him.

Good luck!

All good advise. I do think the bagging is an extra step that isn’t really necessary though. You can acclimate him by simply pouring small amounts water from the 90 into the bucket he is in over the course of 15-20 minutes until you have doubled the amount he was already in. That’s what I do with new fish. Honestly for transfers I just take a net and move with no adverse effects.

It's not that cold inside a house in San Diego today. You would only have to do that if he were working outside or in the garage with a door open, letting in a draft. I've been doing cold water changes and it won't even drop the temperature of a tank.
