New 90 gallon tank stocking!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what kind of random parameters would Randomly switch?
If you have been doing 50% water changes once a week, you won’t have issues with SD water parameters swinging since the KH is high. Acclimitization isn’t necessary either, unless you let your old tank water get real bad without changing it for more than a few weeks with heavy feeding. Your UJ Bichir can handle a 3 degree water temp drop

I'm assuming the new tank is going in the same spot that the old one currently occupies? And that you have been doing proper regular water changes on that old tank?

If this were me, I would put the bichir into a bucket of water from his current tank, cover the bucket, drain and remove the old tank, set up and fill the new tank with tap water of the correct temperature (easy to do), place the old cycled filters into the new tank, move the old heater to the new tank without touching the controls, treat the water with dechlorinator if I used tap water, and then gently pour or, better yet, net the bichir into the new tank. Simply put, it's a 100% water change. No acclimation or other nonsense required. Acclimation is possibly useful for fish that are going long distances, and from one set of water parameters to a vastly different one. That's not the case here.

No bagging required, certainly no schlepping the fish to a LFS for them to bag, no fuss, no muss. Maybe leave the lights off until the next day, and relax.

Relaxing is the most important part; this is not complicated unless you make it so.

Edited to add: Aaaaand...once again, someone ( Rocksor Rocksor in this case) types faster and more concisely than I did...:)

Edited again: I agree, those laser temperature guns are worth their weight in gold.

Thanks both of you guys! I obviously do waterchanges. I do them weekly, and Feed him once every 2-3 days. jjohnwm jjohnwm , do you approve of my stock? Do you like it? I will try to do this tomorrow or the next day.

Approve? Who cares? This is your tank; choose your stocking based upon what you like, obviously keeping an eye on compatibility and suitability for your water. You seem to be doing the research on fish you want to buy, which puts you miles ahead of many of the newer keepers on here, who buy first and then ask questions later. I've only ever owned one bichir in my life, an ornate, so I'm hardly the guy to ask. I liked my ornate...but the idea of a tank full of spiny brown turds lying around on the bottom leaves me cold. :uhoh:

But this isn't my tank! :)

And now, I must take a moment to put on my Nomex coveralls...

Just asking if you think compatibility and overall stocking is good. But thanks!

Anything between 24 and 30 degrees should do. Just make sure to keep them off whenever they're out of water to avoid cracking.

Get a blue inkbird heater controller for aquariums. It will turn both on and off at the same time when the temperature drops by 1 degree. This prevents 1 heater from doing all the work and burning out prematurely
