New 90 gallon tank stocking!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone! How long does it take the tank to heat up all the way?

Depends on the wattage of the heater and size of the tank, and ambient room temperature. 600 watts can raise 1 degree per hour on a 200+g tank.

Just mix hot and cold tap water to get the right temperature. Use an infrared temp gun and measure the water coming into the tank and make adjustments. It's not that hard to get your new tank temp within a degree of your old tank if you do it that way.

So, the filter is an Fx5, and it already has cycled water and media. I’ll use the same filter I have on my 55g as well. I will also use a few 5G buckets of cycled water. Is that good enough? What heater do you recommend?

Is this cylced brand new water? What do you mean by cycled water? You don't need to use any old water from your 55g, just enough for the bucket that Sparky is in. You need to reduce as much of the dirty 55g water as you can.

You should get 2 heaters rated for 90g aquarium or a single heater rated for 180g aquarium. Read the manufacturer's directions on what that heater supports since the heater wattage recommendations are not always the same.

Got it. Seems, dare I say, simple enough! So these are the basic steps:

-drain tank
-bring sparky out and put in 5G bucket of tank water.
-inplug everything and take the tank away
-bring stand and tank up to where they need to be
-fill tank with tapwater and control the heat of the water
-place heater in tank and turn on to desired degree
-pour tank water in there without sparky and let run for more than an hour
-acclimate sparky
-and we good

I do think the bagging is an extra step that isn’t really necessary though. You can acclimate him by simply pouring small amounts water from the 90 into the bucket he is in over the course of 15-20 minutes until you have doubled the amount he was already in. That’s what I do with new fish. Honestly for transfers I just take a net and move with no adverse effects.

Now that you mention it, Shadow might not need to do the bagging step since Sparky is a hardy bichir. I just did it because the fish I was upgrading are quite sensitive, so bagging made gentle acclimation much easier than a bucket (since a bag of fish is smaller, more buoyant, and more easily handled than a big bucket).

The Masked Shadow The Masked Shadow , that should work. Don't forget to let us know how it goes and to share photos of each step if possible - after all, :worthlesswithoutpic:

It's not that cold inside a house in San Diego today. You would only have to do that if he were working outside or in the garage with a door open, letting in a draft. I've been doing cold water changes and it won't even drop the temperature of a tank.
For me it’s less worry about temp more about any swings in params…I guess my reef has got me ultra worried about acclimation.

what kind of random parameters would Randomly switch?
None of them should be different, but it’s possible there are ph, hardness, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate differences based on various conditions, especially being a new tank, at least to my understanding.
