New addition- gt grow out thread.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No they slap their bodies and flare up, and even lip locked once that I saw, but she doesn't head shake until she is ready to spawn.

My last spawn with my large male was at 82. She wouldn't do it around 78-80.

My water temps are high in the summer too. With the ac running pretty much all day I keep the house around 79. Tanks run around 80. Sometimes i use a fan blowing over the surface of the water . Except my sponges filter only tanks always run much cooler. 76-78

DarylMac DarylMac I'll comment having owned many GT, it comes down to the individuals. I've had a couple pairs get along wonderfully. Side by side swimming and sleeping together. Others that just tolerate each other, and others that the male dominated the tank. Will just depend how strong their bond is and how aggressive the male is.

Congrats on a second spawn, and thanks to everyone for the kinds words about my fish!

How are Oliver & Greenie with each other when they don't have fry or are in midst of spawning?

I ask because I am down to Bruce & Leia in my tank now (as far as GT's go), and I'm wondering what to expect?

They spend their time together. Greenie does her thing swimming around the tank and Oliver follows her like a lost puppy. Lol He spent the two and a half or so weeks without eggs/fry trying to get her attention. Shaking and shimmying his body in font of her. She just ignored him till she was ready. It will be interesting to see if that dynamic changes as he grows.

Things are pretty peaceful for the most part right now.

I'll have to remember that once it starts getting hotter. I'll be keeping the shades shut in the morning hours too. This will be my first summer with a fish other then a betta in tanks.

They put on some show!
I hope Oliver is smart enough to not try anything like that for some time. Haha

8wk update

Oliver is doing great. His trailers are getting longer and his body has gotten longer from last month.

As far as the tank goes I thought my girl had fin rot. I freaked out and salted the tank. She is all good now. So either way if it was fin rot or just damage she has healed up.
I've just been stressed so I may have been thinking I had a bigger issue then I did. That added to the fact that she has never even had the slightest damage to her fins before.
Right after adding the salt her and Oliver spawned for the 4th time. The fry are now 3days old and very active. The past batches only make it a few days so still waiting to see if these guys will make it. I'd love to see some swimmers.

I was surprised they have been doing so well since there is still salt in the water.
Then again, maybe that is why these ones seem healthier? Does salt protect against fungus?

Update.
I'm late getting his picture up this month due to other things going on. Plus he has gotten very hard to get even halfway decent pictures of.
Taken today 6/24(he was just fed, please excuse the mess)

He is somewhere around 4 1/2 inches. Still has yet to really bulk up. And his bottom trailer got ripped/torn off durning the last spawn. It was as long as the top before. He is very interactive. Puffing his cheeks anytime anyone or anything comes close to the tank.

Him and Greenie have another batch of fry at the moment. Normally fungus overcomes the fry a day or two after hatching. So I experimented and added salt the day they spawned. The fry started free swimming yesterday:) That is twice now that the fry have lived since I added salt on the day of the spawn. I wanted to confirm that it wasn't just a coincidence last time.

Here is a picture of one of the 5 fry from the may spawn that I have been frowning out. They are about 1in now from end to end. IMG_1087.JPG

He is looking good. Very different dorsal and anal fin compared to my guy. Love the cute fry :)

Good luck raising them.

Do you find the spawning is slowing down their growth?

I think it may have slowed my females growth down. She has stayed at about 6in for a while now. My male I feel has grown fast. Almost like he is trying to catch up to his girl as fast as possible, lol. Length wise he is getting close, but she has a much bigger body mass then him.
He does have a different kind of fin shape going on. I like that his trailers get long. I hope they continue to grow out.

And thank you, I'm excited to see the little guys color up more:)
