PP, Ray says it's a male. I'll let you guys duke it out. ;)

:headbang2 :headbang2

Alright, here is my theory on it being female. I'm not entirely certain cuz I haven't seen a whole bunch of large female vennies, but the ones I have seen lack the normally distinct white line in the dorsal fin that is used to define females among Lugubris pikes. They do however have either a really intense or at least moderately pink abdomen.

Generally males lack the pink abdomen. Its been proven among fish that males are attracted to the pink abdomen, the pinker it is, the more intensely attracted they are. Its an indicator of a fertile, sometimes gravid female. Kinda suck for a male to have a pink abdomen and have other males hit on him. . .

Again I could be wrong and Ray will feed me some of that tasty humble pie, but at least I'll get a good kick out of it and learn a thing or two. :headbang2

I was thinking Johanna with all of that pink/redness. Im rusty though. Been out of the pike game for a while now. I hope those two (pikes) can work out their differences. It would be a shame to have 1 beat the tar out of the otherr...

You may be right, but, the one that didn't make it had the white sub-orbital stripe. . . maybe not characteristic of Vennies, but then again, maybe this isn't a vennie at all ;) Also, I think that the red coloration covers more of the body than just the belly, though it doesn't seem to show too well in the vid. I would never try to serve humble pie, though, I have eaten it a few times in my life :naughty:

P.S. Your comment about "where is the male" totally shot over my head

I think that the head shape is wrong for a Johanna, but, there are sooooo many that don't have a proper description to go by, so, who really knows?

I'll shoot another vid when he/she is out and about a little more. So far, he's got no torn fins and I don't expect the lent to be able to do much damage, especially with the ray on the vennie's side. ;)

We think alike no? LoL. You have the slight advantage of having owned the pair, so I'll accept my defeat and start chowing down!!!

Definitely not johanna, the nostrils are too far back, and there is a ocelli at the base of the cadual. Johanna has nostrils practically on the lip, and there is no ocelli at the base of the cadual.

Its possible its sp. 'lugubris'. They seem to have the more distinct gill plate and humeral blotch behind the pectoral.

Don't underestimate the lent. You'd be surprised how quickly they can dominate and destroy a pike. :( All the vennie has to do is show a little give and the lent will suck it all up. Luckily the tank size is on your side. :D
