Alright, here is my theory on it being female. I'm not entirely certain cuz I haven't seen a whole bunch of large female vennies, but the ones I have seen lack the normally distinct white line in the dorsal fin that is used to define females among Lugubris pikes. They do however have either a really intense or at least moderately pink abdomen.
Generally males lack the pink abdomen. Its been proven among fish that males are attracted to the pink abdomen, the pinker it is, the more intensely attracted they are. Its an indicator of a fertile, sometimes gravid female. Kinda suck for a male to have a pink abdomen and have other males hit on him. . .
Again I could be wrong and Ray will feed me some of that tasty humble pie, but at least I'll get a good kick out of it and learn a thing or two.![]()
