If your going planted, are you going to have a DIY yeast reactor for CO2 or just buy a Dupla one?

Congrats on the little kidling.

Hadn't really given any thought about CO2 to be honest. Will have to look into it once I get it to a point I can add water.

Thanks, I'm just a little excited about the little one, only 7 weeks to go, I've got a feeling it will be more like 5 or 6 weeks though. :D

Cheers

don't tell me you also planned the wires on the ceiling... seems like a very clean set up-no wires exposed. very envious of the nice job. mind me if i ask you.. the metal square you had welded, are these 2.5cm x 2.5cm or bigger? looks really sturdy and light. i had my 180 gal (6x2x2) stand made from 8 pillars of 10cmx10cm wood. and it was as heavy as it can be. i regret using wood... i might go with steel for my next project on a big tank. at least it does not warp if it got wet and besides.. with powder coating rust and a good amount of layered enamel paint is the last thing in mind... :D

nice to know you will do some plants. with your lights, i don't see any need for CO2 unless the plant is intermediate to hard on keeping they alive. now, i am no expert on plants.. i just notice that if the tank is has plenty of lights some low maintenance plants grow like weeds.:D

Nah, the lights where an after thought. The original plan was to mount some Metal Halide floodlights on steel post that came up the back of the tank, but when these Metal Halide fixtures came up for AU$30 Each, I couldn't knock them back. Looks so much classier than what the floodlights ever would have.

So Saturday my sparky mate came round and we ran some wires to the ceiling from the Aquarium circuit, put a couple of power points in the ceiling, couple of timer's (4 in total) and a kill switch down under the stand. (just in case something ever goes wrong, lot easier than trying to find a ladder in a crisis! :naughty: ) 3 hours later, the finished result.

The steel is actully 40mm x 40mm with a 3mm wall. She's not light, took 4 of us to lift it comfortably. 2 Can do it, but they strugle a little. BUt it only cost about $140 total.

With the plants I was thinking the same thing, my previous tank (6x2x2) was heavily planted, and only had 4 4ft Fluro's. That plants grew like crazy!, no CO2, and only the ocasional dose of fertilizer. I'll try and dig up a picture of it.

Great looking setup!!! Very nice.

Ok, did a little more today, cleaned out all the plaster dust from last Saturday. Put in the 2nd heater, also plumbed up the 2nd filter.
Getting closer to water time, hope to get the gravel cleaned this coming weekend, washed all the big rocks for it last Sunday so they are all good to go.

Here's a photo with all the lighs on, and the 2nd heater and filter all setup.

Species of plants such as Elodea, Java Fern/Moss, Hornwort, etc, all the cheapies, dont really need CO2. However, when you go into the nicer looking plants such as ricca, the ludwigia species, Amazon Sword etc, then you'll ned lighting around 1 watt per litre, fertilizer with IRON in it, as well as some CO2. A DIY yeast reactor is far cheaper then a $500 Dupla set you'd have to pay for a tank this size.
