New Asian Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello I have a question to ask and wonder if anyone knows the solution to help. My arowana is now getting used to the tank and is starting to show signs of aggression. To claim it’s territory it’s starting to harm other fish when I’m not around. The gar has now torn fins, as well as the peacock bass. Besides being new to the tank, I think the arowana’s aggression to the gar has caused it stress so it’s still not eating.

is there any way to reduce the arowana’s aggression? I know that most would say separate them, but the thing is I have no space for another tank, or even if I put a divider, it would not work long term as these fish have to grow.
Are there any other ideas? I would appreciate it. Thanks so much.

A few options. - silver dollars - 4-6 will give the aro targets to take out its aggression and hopefully defuse it.

egg crate divider.

pick which one you want to keep and let the other go.

I think you mentioned something previous about not having more room in the tank for more fish, which can be a limiting factor. When fish get to a point of getting too big for their space, often they start to get aggressive with each other more and more often. So if the tank is crowded the aggressive behaviour will likely increase until there are less fish in the tank. Either by you removing them or they will kill each other off.

Thanks for ur help. Rn the tank is about 220g, and there’s plenty of space at the moment as the fish are still small-ish. Divider won’t really work as I would like The fish to grow. I’m quite reluctant to remove any stocking as I really like them all.for the idea of adding silver dollars, hmmm that got me thinking. Ik my tank is not massive compared to most peoples tanks in this forum, but is it okay to add silver dollars with my current stocking now or would it become overcrowded? And if so, how many as I don’t want to be an irresponsible owner and be overstocked or have way too high a bio load.

4-6 is a good school size, it would be fine for now, but eventually most of these fish will outgrow the tank.

Like I mentioned - 4-6 is a good number but try to get some bigger sized ones that the aro doesn’t just eat them. The aro will grow a fair bit faster than the silver dollars and in my experience will eventually eat them if it catches them if they are too small.

Are you sure it's the aro? Ornate bichirs are super aggressive and the gar might be parking on the bottom at night and the ornate might be taking offense to him being in his space. Just a possibility but still a possibility
Yup thanks. But now I have to figure out where to keep the silver dollars afterwards or who I can give ?. And I have to find where I can buy silver dollars the right size as well.

May be a possibility as I’ve seen the ornate biting the ray and dehelzi before, but I’m 90% sure it’s arowana as if seen the arowana nipping the gar before.
