New Asian Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Recently my red tail golden arowana had committed suicide by jumping out of the tank and into the filter box. Hence I went out on the hunt for a new arowana and managed to find a new high back arowana for a very reasonable price of $140 USD and came with a certificate :)

it’s about 14 inches, and was fed market prawns before. I tried feeding it market prawns but it just spat it out, however I’m certain it would start eating soon. Hoping this one would turn into a beautiful specimen when it reaches adulthood and scales would shine ?

Very nice arowana and motoro. Hope to see her when it gets older. 1D421936-1F11-4FE7-AAC7-BCD4120E1E8C.jpegThis is my arowana.

. Why don't you read on the species you have as they usually have stickies on those you are keeping as they are quite common monster fishes. I'm a bit reluctant to give advise as I don't want to be the guilty of any mishap. I'm really unsure on rays, but I would expect the gar, bichir and arowana to be quite hardy fishes. So using 1 gram salt per liter should be fine. Or it's 3.785 gram of salt per gallon of water.

But why are you treating your tank with salt? Is it to prevent diseases or the injuries are getting infected? Personally, I'd only treat the tank when some occupant(s) needs it, but that's just me.

Didn’t you and Matteus advise me to add kosher/ aquarium salt yesterday to increase the healing rate for my peacock bass injuries? I’m confused now.

Lol they won’t get stunted if the aro kills it so you dont have to worry about space then.

salt is fine for rays. Make sure it isn’t iodized. I use kosher salt. If you read the stickies in the ray section here it has lots of useful info including what meds are safe or not. It’s a bit old but most of the info is still useful
I’ll try to make an effort to go down to the nearest aquarium tmrw and check whether they have silver dollars. If not I’ll try to find a divider…

Hello I have a question to ask and wonder if anyone knows the solution to help. My arowana is now getting used to the tank and is starting to show signs of aggression. To claim it’s territory it’s starting to harm other fish when I’m not around. The gar has now torn fins, as well as the peacock bass. Besides being new to the tank, I think the arowana’s aggression to the gar has caused it stress so it’s still not eating.

is there any way to reduce the arowana’s aggression? I know that most would say separate them, but the thing is I have no space for another tank, or even if I put a divider, it would not work long term as these fish have to grow.
Are there any other ideas? I would appreciate it. Thanks so much.

You can add wave maker and tank mates to reduce aggressions

i do have a wave maker, but idk why it was placed at the bottom of the tank. Till I go to the aquarium I’ve placed ping pong balls to distract the arowana and it does seem to be working.

Finally got the silver dollars. They are quite small, only about 2-3 inches. In my 55g community tank grow out for now, I’ll probably put them in the main tank once they reach about 5-6 inches. Got a small figure 8 puffer as well ?
