And the moral of the story is...

...even a little bit of easy internet research prior to buying fish would tell you if they require brackish water or will eat your plants or will get eaten by something else you have. Learning from mistakes is definitely part of life...but you don't actually need to make all the mistakes yourself. You can learn from the mistakes of others and avoid them yourself.

"Oh! Shiny! Want!!!!" is a bad way to buy fish.

Usually I do my research before buying fish, just that Singapore was facing lockdown at that time and I could only visit aquariums very rarely. Hence I bought the silver dollar when I saw it as I knew I wouldn’t be able to get another one anytime soon. Didn’t know I got the smaller species.

question: are red hooks just silver dollars? They look exactly alike

Red hooks grow bigger. But they are still very slow growers. The silver dollars need to be at a larger size to begin with, you can’t expect them to catch up to the aro’s growth rate.

I find all silver dollars look the same when they are small to the untrained eye. Only very small differences in the different sp that can be discerned by someone who knows the differences. I have kept about 6-7 different types of sd’s and at certain sizes they all look the same as a typical common sd. But they often transform as they grow which I find extremely fascinating.

I am sorry that I wasn’t really clear about the silver dollars being a bigger size than the aro could eat when I originally encouraged you to try them. I said the appropriate size- but I should have been more clear and stated outright what the appropriate size would look like.

did you consider getting parrot fish? I know they sell different variations of parrot fish in singapore like santa parrot.
