does my lap not have any pattern because on my substrate? or is he still stressed

I don't think your lap would show it's pattern on that substrates. Change it to tan or red, it will darken up it's patterns. Most lower jaw bichirs especially lapradei are harder to make it's pattern to get darken unless the patterns were already dark.

Here my lap before at 15" kept in river pebbles substrates for a year and the patterns never darken up.

Now at 18" I changed the substrate to red and it only took about a week and the patterns start to darken up.

ok. im looking into black sand would that darken up the bichirs?

cohazard, i am thinking about a koliba or koloton from toyin

It will darken up the bichir but the pattern and base color would blend together and the pattern will still not show. Tan and red are the best for making a bichir's pattern to show up. Although ornates and most upper jaws bichirs won't have any effects on which substrates you put them. They still color up.

The man knows his polypterus keeping, listen to him for he is wise. :)

Those are some nice variants, best of luck to you aspear with which ever you choose.

very nice!

Nigerian laps can have nice contrasting patterns too, it just depends on the individuals (take a look at CDM's laps). And then as king-el said, red/tan is the best if you wanna maximize its potential.

can i use the reptile sand? how does red 3m colorquarts look?

I also use 3m red quartz mix with black tahitian moon sand. I only add about close a quarter of black sand and the rest are red sand.

Get the s-grade as they are finer. T-grade are ruff.
