New blue eye cochliodon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Really nice. Make sure to have driftwood in the tank. He will rasp on the wood and it helps his digestion. They are veggie eaters so you can feed cucumber, zuchini, sweet Potatoe. That's what my royals like but obviously you can try other things. He will also eat a variety of pellets.

Probably whatever you through in.

What's your temp at? I keep mine south Americans at 80 degrees.

As for stocking I guess I would stay away from bottom dwellers if he already killed one. But he also might be fine with smaller plecos that just stay out of his way. Any top fish should be fine.

Great pick up

Thank you! And yeah there's a whole ton of it In there to help with my water parameters and same on the 80 degrees actually! Also i was wondering if I could keep some discus and tetra with him in the future? But I'm pretty sure the discus would like it a little warmer then 80 and idk if I wanna put Harvey above that. What do you guys think? Would the discus do ok in 80 degrees?

Probably best at 80 for the long term. Most people wouldn't do discus with such a big pleco because of the fish waste especially a panaque this size. Doesn't mean it can't be done but not really the best.

Too much meaty food for discus would also not be good for the pleco, risk of bloat. Angelfish would work or look at some geophagus. Geos do fine with some current and then can both eat a variety of vegetable based flakes and pellets.

Good idea! I'll definently look into the geos! Also do you happen to know the average lifespan of the blue eye cochlodion? The previous owner said theye can live upwards of 60 years but i take everything with a grain of salt so i dont know if to believe that.

No not sure on lifespan. I've heard they can take like 10 years to get to adult size, so I guess 50 to 60 years might be possible.

I know some cories and smaller plecos only say they can life to 5 to 7 years but I've met a man that has some that are 10+ years old. (Can't remember exactly what he said)

Tough in the aquarium, that's a long time to never make a mistake or to never have equipment failure etc,

That is one awesome beast there

Could you take a close up pic of his mouth? Looks like he has some cysts in this mouth. Yes Panaques do like to rasp wood but it would be better that wood is some softer species. For example mangrove is hard wood. I have heard that bigger panaque species could live over 100 years old. Many catfish species in general live surprisingly long time.

Wow that is awesome! And I will try my best to get a good pic of his mouth very rarely can I put my hand in the tank without him throwing a temper tantrum.
