New Build ~ 600 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Joe, I hope you are well! I am not sure the total history on it but they were a pair of 600's and a friend sold them to a new owner. I missed my chance. I was able to track down this one but lost out on the other. It was already sold.

The guy that sold them lives south of me an hour or so. I don't recall his name, sorry.
I'm doing good, thanks. Nice project you got going there, very jealous! I'm going to have to upgrade from my 180 sometime

Glad to hear you're doing well. Thank you! When you do give me a call or shoot me a PM. I will likely have a tank for same here soon.

Now to clean it up. more scrubbing...

Threw together some extra pieces I had laying around for fun and almost talked myself into using a hammerhead and Ultima 1000 on this sump but forgot about the backwash design. This has to be a low flow sump. It would look good good but wouldn't serve a purpose

All clean.

I doubt K1 will go in here but threw some in to mess around. I may just fill this chamber with ceramic and call it a day. I need to decide what to do for a pump here. For now am planning on an extra Laguna 2400

Keep in mind this sump is only to exchange water between two tanks and tether the pup tanks to the main system. It doesn't need to perform like a traditional sump so we can get creative on this one but need enough bio to support two 50 gallons.

Been wanting to try matala mat for a while. This is a test sheet to see. It is an awesome way to contain K1. Thanks for turning me onto this stuff vincentwugwg vincentwugwg

It's coming together. You can see the rough design below. The Ultima's are going to the left side of the tank. The pup nursery is mounted above the filters to not lose space.

Now to switch to the tank plumbing..
x2 2" gravity fed, open channel drains for the sump
x2 2" intakes for the closed loop
x6 3/4 returns
x2 3/4" returns from the sump

These are the intakes on the interior side of the tank. I chose all black plumbing so the equipment is not a focal piece and little pieces of paint aren't chipping off everywhere (huge pet peeve of mine). The basket strainers although large are designed to be away from the wall. This is so a ray or pup are not stuck to them while playing with the pipes.

Anyone who keeps rays (especially itaituba and henlei) know they love nothing more than to break things in the tank. Because, you know.. It's Tuesday morning and this pipe looks fun to smash on...

You get the general idea of what I am going for here.

20161013_205135.jpg 20161013_205251.jpg

I went with low profile intake screens for the open channel drains/overflows. No rays will be stuck to these as there is not enough suction to hold them to it and only 50% of a single drain is needed for the flow I am running..

Test fit for height. I like this height but settled on a little shorter pipe. The substrate being used is heavy but need to be limited on how much will make it's way into the pumps. There are one of these intakes per Dart/Ultima combo.

I went with a simple drop down approach for the overflows/intakes. All was well and good until I realized what I did wrong...................
