New cat rant. Anyone rescue lately?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know what you mean about the chihuahua. I don't care much for them either. They can be clingy, yappy little critters, can't they? I person I work with has 5 of them.

all my cats in recent decades have showed up as strays.
I am fortunate to not live in the city, so when cats show up I can feed & tame a feral without locking it inside a house. learned a long time ago how crazy some can be when the door closes behind them ;-)
I had one tom who shot straight up over the curtain rod & clawed his way down. up & down, up & down, yowling like someone had ahold of him. I opened that door and he shot out like he had been lit on fire.
LOL.
ok? so now I understand more about confinement issues. mind you, I had been working on this guy for quite a while & he had let me pet him.
recent years, all females. they get affectionate & follow me all over out in my yard but honestly, after being loose so much of their life they just do short indoor visits then want OUT.
wish I could upload an old short vid of my current female when I first started touching her, it was hilarious: purr, hiss spit growl, purr. looked psycho.
anyhow, don't risk yourself. I've seen nasty ulcerated cat infections.

Lol wow. Sounds like he really wanted outside. I've had a few cats that hated being indoors but for the most part all my cats (even the ones I rescued from outside) prefer to be indoors. Even though this cat has been outside for a considerable amount of time, you can tell she was someone's indoor cat by the way she acts. She's looked out the storm door but doesn't seem to have any interest of wanting to go out yet.

Congrats on the soon to be baby!!...I am pregnant with our first..but much earlier in to it than you. ( so exciting and scarey )

...on to the rescues..we rescued allot of cats, or used to before we could not get rid of some..glad to have rescued and will do it again..she looks like a handful!

Thank you and congrats to you too. ;] it's nerve-racking but I agree, very exciting. I feel like I've had enough back pain to last the rest of my life lol I've had it since the beginning whereas I thought it started later on.

Ya that last pic is the mom, it's kinda weird their patterns are the exact opposite but we saw another kitten a few months later that looked just like ours so we think they came from the same male. I don't really like letting the mom outside either tho, she sneaks out on the balcony and scales my apartment if we accidentally forget her outside. Its only happened 3 times but we literally find her clinging to the screen of our 2nd story bedroom window lol. But I can't believe yours is being so aggressive now, it sounds like that trip to the vet traumatized him so you probably just have to rebuild his trust. Or you can just bring out a string toy to take out his aggression on ;)

I find it fascinating how the parents can have babies that look nothing alike but thats genetics for ya. Lol really, quite the escape artist. I can't believe she is either.. Just last night when I was feeding her wet food for the first time she got really aggressive towards the other cats while I was preparing it, so I made her get out of the kitchen. That's the most aggressive I've seen her so far but I know she probably hasn't had it in a long time and probably got paranoid.

I took her to the vet the second day I had her because I didn't want to introduce a sick cat to healthy ones that are up to date on shots. I'm sure she wasn't happy about it but did pretty well at the vets considering the fact she got blood work done as well as a rabies shot. Good idea, I think I'll break out the laser light soon.

Rehoming. We have 3 rescues already. I lost all my "babies" in a house fire in 09, and I still Dont want any dogs( grieving still), but we took in a funny looking puppy with parvo when we moved back into the house. Then a year ago someone decided to dump a brindle lab (female) and a chihuahua(male) in my front yard. They both had some issues, worst of which was the lab was so abused she would pee herself anytime a guy would even look at her. The Chihuahua had eye issues and almost lost one. The puppies we have were found in a storm drain and were in horrible condition and smelled of rancid pee ( it took three baths to get rid of it).

Sad thing is I have always been an AmStaff/ pitbull owner(we literally had a pack/ we lost 5 adults and 3 puppies in the fire) I always disliked small dogs and now somehow I always have a damn chihuahua stuck to my leg.

Oh man I'm so sorry to hear that and I can only imagine the pain you went through losing them like that. Sounds like your rescues had a really rough time and are in a good place now. I'm not fond of small dogs either, prefer medium/large breed dogs and find chihuahuas to be mean.. mine were ankle biters.

My mom rescued a kitten that I got at work once. I was at Taco Bell working and a customer had a kitten in the car. I said cute cat, she said take, practically threw it through the drive thru window. I stuck it in a box, called mom to come get it. It was funny trying to keep the cat in the box with chicken and steak pieces with my boss out on the front line.

Mom called him Trouble. He was the meanest cat we have ever had. He had to be kept on a leash inside the house to keep from hurting any of the other cats or the dog. Absolutely vicous towards anyone but Mom, and he bit and scratched her a number of times. Got to the point we took him to the vet to give to one of the assistants who wanted a barn cat. Trouble bit the heck out of the assistant while trying to give him a shot. Ended up in quarantine over it. Mom brought him back, put him outside in a cage, she wouldn't let him run loose, afraid he would get hit by a car or starve to death. We finally gave him to a shelter, because we simply could not handle him anymore. It still bothers mom that she doesn't know what happened to Trouble.

I wouldn't take the chance with a baby present. I would take your cat to a no-kill shelter and let them do the best they can for her. You are doing the best you can by giving her the chance that you are now. Most people wouldn't attempt to keep or try to care for a mean cat. Maybe it is personality, or maybe she is just meant to be an outside cat.

Funny way to get a cat and he definitely sounded like his namesake. Thanks for the advice, makes me feel less guilty about rehoming her. She's still trying to get used to things so I don't want to be too crucial on her but at the same time have to be fair to the cats that already live here as well as the baby coming. I know if things don't change a little bit before the baby comes she will be rehomed..

Just took a few more pics. Thought maybe I would lower her energy level with toys and she goes crazy for string.

I also am not sure at this point if she's actually fixed. I thought maybe the scar may be evidence of that but she has been rolling around/cleaning herself, so I'm not quite sure since the only way to really find out is to have her taken in to be spayed.

Me and my wife fostered 5 two week old kittens from the humane society. They had no mother so we had to bottle feed them every three hours. All five did really awesome. We ended up adopting the only girl and one of the boys and a coworker of mine adopted the orange guy. I hope the two all white ones got adopted after we gave them back.

Mad props to the Charleston Animal Society.

Our third cat adopted us. She showed up late one night and laid claim to our porch. She looked prego so we took her in. After a while we kinda figured she wasn't preggers (too long gestating) so we took her to get fixed. Even the vet thought she was late term. Turns out she had the spay tattoo so there was no way she even was. We still love her chunk *** and she still defends our porch with a vengeance.

That's awesome, I'm glad to hear that. The last animals I bottle fed were puppies but only 3 out of 6 made it. One of which we still haven't found a home for. Sounds like quite a feisty cat as well lol

Is that in Charleston, SC? That's where I'm from.

Someone my mom works with, their father in-law, was diagnosed with lung cancer and I guess was unable to really care for the cat. We were looking to rescue anyway, so I guess that counts as a short rescue story :D
Here she is, her name is Bella. I kind of want to change her name, but she's had it for four years and it just doesn't seem right to change it haha.

Posing for the camera:)

My cat doesn't care what name I call her. She doesn't answer to any of them anyway. She acts completely deaf unless there is food present. Now that she is the only cat there, she has taken over a room for herself. She sits on the baby gate on her doorway, waits for me to come by and give her a ride to the other side of the house. She likes to ride on my shoulder, I have all kinds of scratches on my back from that, or her latest thing is she wants to be carried on a pillow. She acts like a little queen now that her competition is gone. Her name is Princess and I got her as a foster kitty. She and the others in her litter had been retrieved from a storm drain pipe. Rescues can be very loving. My 2 dogs are rescues also.
