so yea as i ws saying, add what ever substrate you like, gravel, bare bottom tank, sand anything like that, just a word of advice, dont get bright coloured gravel like rainbow mix and stuff, the other members will constantly tell you to change it, they dont like it but its YOUR tank not thiers, so all in all its what you decide to put in,

for hiding and decor, you can choose anything from bogwood, slate, stone, big rocks, flat rocks, cobbles, plastic plants, silk plants, REAL plants, plastic castle LOL anything you want really, though what is best and to observe the fish wit hall its instincts going at full throttle, build an as natural looking setup as possible, such as dark or natural gravel, with some bogwood and some "caves" made from rocks piled on each other / propped up on bog wood, or you can buy fake caves made from fire glass or non toxic plastic from any reputable LFS, if you use rocks out of your garden be careful and thoroughly clean them, soak them in boiling water to get rid of any potential pathogens and or germs / bacteria. then after the cycle, when you get your danios / minnows you could add some real life plants if you wanted, elodia crispa i would reccomend for a first setup, as it is hardy and i have found from personal experience that i can grow in tropical and cold temps.

hope this bit more info is any help :)

im pretty sure synos will eat algae as juvinilles but will need to be fed pellets as they age. maybe im wrong idk

So after the cycle which you said takes 6-8 weeks I think? I can add real plants, and my knife. But what about the Danios? Leave them in there I'm guessing? Then after 2-3 months get the Catfish, lace catfish. Get two or three?

after you put the knife-fish in, you only need to wait a few weeks before adding the catfish because apparently they don't eat algae. Make sure you but sinking waffers for the catfish when you get him. yeah, they do sell aquarium sand at petco/petsmart but it is rather expensive. i've heard of people using play sand that you would use for other purposes in their aquarium, im not too good in that field so i dont want to give you the wrong information. as for cleaning your tank, you should vaccum your substrate at least every 1-2 weeks along with at least a 25% water change. plus you should clean the glass when ever you see an exessive build up of algae.

Get a pleco, maybe a rhino pleco, or bushy nose pleco. Just make sure you put in a small piece of drift wood for it to chew on also. Synodontis are great, I have two. Pictus don't get as big, and they're ok.

Welcome to mfk!
