New Discus Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi all,

Just thought I would update on the progress of the tank.

I have taken all the substrate out for maintenance, I just find it so much easier to clean without the substrate not to mention easier to treat the tank if the Discus get worms or Gill fluke as they are prone to do so..

I also picked up these 2 White Butterflies.

I can't stand bare tanks like that, they look like they are in a hospital room.

great tank, great fish

I agree with the sterile, hospital look of bare tanks. I know it's more work to have substrate and plants (real or fake) etc but it's what makes the tank beautiful.

In my honest opinion I believe that to keep happy healthy Discus you need to remove the substrate from the tank.
As you get a lot of nasties harboring deep inside the substrate and as soon as you gravel vac or move some wood they become active in the water column.

Since I removed my gravel I have my Discus laying every 2 weeks I have 4 pairs and prior to removing the gravel they would not lay and would always come down with something be it fluke or worms.

I am not apposed to gravel all together as my 450 Gal has plenty of it as does my 320 Gal I just feel that Discus are more sensitive to these type of parasites.
and as anyone who knows me knows that I am very meticulous when it comes to cleaning and maintaining my tanks.

Just my 2cents worth
