hmm i just had a huge ammonia spike. just did a 50% WC and gravel vac. i think its cuz i had 2 fish die that i couldnt find...i just dont get how 2 dead bodies can cause a huge spike. wack ass ammonia

hey if a snail has his hard door thing is it still alive? i literally have an apple snail that i cant tell if its dead or alive, he never moves and it looks like his shell is gonna just crack. but the hard door is still there. he could also be the reason for the spike...should i just chuck him?

hey Bob we are both starting crayfish projects.Maybe we can trade down the road?

i actually recently started a cray project, too. Well, sort of... I've always had crays (blue, tiger, zebra, etc.). Well, I decided to try breeding them, so I separated the blues from the rest into their own tank, and voila, both my females are carrying eggs. My water temp's a little on the low side, but according to calculations, they should start hatching around next weekend.

Do you have a QT tank available?

hey, Sea World Pet Center in Salem, NH just told me that alligator gars are illegal, and that's why they can't carry them or take any in. Is this true??

Yes, it may very well be responsible for an ammonia spike, the two deal fish probably didn't help either. Here's what you do: Pick the snail up and give it a good sniff. If that gives you a gag reflex, it's dead.

Or, give it a good shake. If the snail feels "loose" inside the shell, you'll hear/feel it. If so, keep shaking it. Eventually, the body slides/pops right out of the shell. And Tommy's right; snails reek when they're dead! And when you shake the shell, be careful, cuz sometimes the dead, rotted body goes flying across the room...
