New filtration setup questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends on what results your talking about. You wont "notice" the positive results it has regarding the health of your fish and wont notice ease in filter maintenance until you clean them

Although we live in Georgia, my dad is in Miami for work. I was going to see if he wanted to pick up a sump while he was there. Is this a good deal? http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/for/5475856402.html

Can't tell how big the sump is, but $30 seems like a good price. If you use it in conjunction with your 2215's you should have enough filtration. Like jaws said, you won't notice results from the septibac until you perform filter maintainence. The septobac does a great job of breaking down organic matter (fish poop). It won't help cycle your tank any quicker. I'm sorry if I led you to believe that. It's done such a good job for me that I no longer have to perform bi weekly substrate vacs on my tank.

Looks like that sump is rated for up to 200 gallons (realistically more like 100-150). Looks like a good deal. I'd have your dad get it if he can.

You didn't leave me to the conclusion that it made my tank cycle faster. If you did, I would have five boxes of it, Although I did think that it would clean the waste off of the bottom of the tank.

I was expecting it to clean the bottom of the tank (fish waste) I'm not sure if that's how it works, but that's what I had in my head.

I spoke to my dad about sumps and said he was being open minded and looking for every filtering option there is, and then decide. Although he said that, he sound very biased towards a custom canister. He was looking at using a large filter sock with multiple layers of foam pads in them. He said he wanted the sock to be 8" in diameter and 3' long. He also said the canister would be 4' tall and it would have about 10"-12" for bio media. Along with that, my dad said that he found a 600 gph pump that should be able to run it. To be honest, I don't think it will work as well as he wants it to.

The septobac should should start to take effect in the next week or two. A 4' canister is ridiculously huge lol. You'd probably need a 2,000+ gph pump to power a monster like that

Also, I've never heard of anyone running a filter sock in a canister.

It's supposed to be custom and "15x" better than a 2215. I don't believe him, but when he spends another $200-300 and it goes to waste, maybe he'll listen to me next time.

It could work with a very large pump. Just doesn't seem very practical
