New filtration setup questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2215 is not a very powerful can if thats what your using to judge by. I had a 2217 on a 75 gal and an ac110.

Makes no sense with the sock in a can. Plus i dont think socks are made to be used with high pressure could be wrong though. Custom can is a waste imo.
Just build a sump or buy a decent can from a reputable company

Make sure your dad realizes that the pump he is talking about will have to deal with "head loss". I put it in quotes because with a closed canister filter the inlet and outlet are in the same water level and theoretically have no head loss, however, there will be loss from pulling/pushing the water through the media and sponges and through the elbows in the lines. Realistically, that 600gph pump will probably be lucky to hit 300-400gph with that setup. I'm not sure if that will be good enough. I would think that you will want to look at a closer to 1000-1200gph pump.

I am using a sump in my setup and will be using two 1290gph pumps. With head loss and throttling of the pumps I am going to be looking for about 1500gph of real flow.

The idea your dad has actually sounds pretty good but remind him that it will need to be easy to do maintenance on it. I think if he can make it easy to maintain and get a bigger pump then it could be a pretty good filter.

It could work with a very large pump. Just doesn't seem very practical

I've been trying to tell him all of this. A homemade sump would likely be the cheapest.

I was even thinking about price but your correct. I was thinking about cleaning.
I dont wanna clean a 2262 imagine cleaning a custom can that size.

Can your dad send you a link of the company thats building it ?

I'll look into that.

I talked to my dad about the filter, and he said the the sock would have multiple layers. On the inside would be 200 micron, surrounding that 50 micron, and after that 10-20 micron.

I just glansed at it but i dont know man i looked like they were more geared towards hime filtration

Either way i wouldnt trust them. Tou need to let your dad know about potential disasters.
Cans/sump are moving water from your tank to basically your floor level. A 4 ft can has an issue your in for a flood.

Plus where is he going to store the 4ft canister ? Thats bigger than my pool filter

You're best bet is to go with something that is tried in true in the aquarium hobby. I good canister like eheim, or a good sump like eshopps. Your dad seems to be taking a calculated rush by using this company. The results could be great, but they could also be very disappointing.

We have a storage room two feet away from the aquarium.
