New filtration setup questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would go with either a sump or an eheim 2262.
Does it work better than the Fx6? If I do buy another eheim, I want it to have filter trays, which it doesn't look like this one has. The cost of this is very close to a sump, so I not sure if I should buy this over a sump. I do like the fact this is rated for 900gph/500g, and that I can use carbon in it (unlike the sump, where I have to pay another $100+ for a media reactor).

It doesn't have filter trays so I just use media bags. Trays just take up space imho. I love my 2262. It beats the crap out my fx6 in terms of waterflow, reliability, maintainence time and most importantly overall bio capacity. Setting up a sump would be quite a bit more difficult and a bit more expensive. If you have a huge bio load I'd build a sump. If not, I'd go the 2262 route.

Looks Iike your gonna be moderately stocked. Maintainence is pretty easy on the 2262 but it is nothing compared to how easy a sump is. You will have more options with a sump, but there's also a lot more that can go wrong (at least in my experience). I have both (1 sump on a 150 and 2 2262's on a 400). I'd go with the 2262 all day.

I had an fx6 and replaced it with a 2262. Hands down i prefer the 2262. No bi pass and if you use poret foam from swiss tropicals you wont be disappointed. The fx6 doesnt move nearly the amount of water the 2262 does.

Im actually going to be replacing the 2262 with a sump eventually. The maintenance os a p.i.t.a. in the 2262, thought it was worse on the fx6 though those trays are a nightmare

Frank is one of the main guys who helped me set up my first 2262. I'd listen to him. I personally can get the maintainence of my 2262's done in under 15 minutes, but like I said before that is an eternity when compared to a sump.

I'm getting the feeling that the 2262 may be a little better than the Fx6 (Sarcastic). Do you just use one media bag, or enough to make a layer in the filter? Another question: How much does it cost to run a month (media wise)?

Thank you all for answering my questions and not criticizing my setup/problem without reading the original thread post (I have had people do that before, and I've only made about ten threads).

I use lots of media bags for all of my bio filtration( this is my top layer). My 2262's house 5-6 bags each. The bags are fine mesh and are very easy to clean. Sorry but I don't know how much it costs to run. It costs me nothing to run them bc I don't use replaceable media like carbon or purigen. The required bio media is very expensive, but you'll have to buy the same amount if not more for a sump.

I plan on using a mix of the bags, filter pads, and maybe bio-balls.

You got it brother. Almost all of us are here to help each other out, not criticize the way you choose to keep your fish.
