wait until he is about 9-12" before putting him in your 300g. i recall you saying that he is 4" and if so he will be about 5-7" in a few weeks and that is to small to go in a tank so big. due to broken back if he is spooked. just a little advise from my personal experience of putting a 2" longnose in a 10g tank. Thank you, I wouldn't even of thought about that. I'm glad i said that about the 300. So I should wait for him to be at least like 10" or so?
My lfs did the same to me but its better in the long run getting a 500g tank is better then having to fork out for a 1000g lol.
