New guy with Two silvers!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well my girlfriend got me a HD camera for christmas so I decided to show you guys in HD what this "fin rot looks like"

you can see my one guy I have had for 6 months is healthy as could be...

the new guy, not so much. I have noticed new fin growth tho in his upper and lower fins...when I got him, they looked alot worse. Its just the tail thats really bad. It seems like its almost eating his flesh but he is acting/eating normal.

Gonna need to keep him in water that has zero ammonia and nitrite levels with nitrate levels no higher then 10ppm. If you were able to test your watr params it would be helpful.

If it were me, I would isolate the aro and treat with melafix and pimafix and 50% water changes on a daily basis.

Your 12" Aro will always be the more dominant one. It's normal to have aggression between a pair of Aros of any species. Best is to have a group of 5 or more to decrease the aggression but even in a bigger group they will always have a slight aggression towards each one another. Don't worry though they won't kill eachother. Broken fins and scales missing do heal but it takes time.

Myself I have 3 silver 14-15" Aros and they grew up together from 4" til now. They grew up first in a 120g then once they reached 10" I moved them into a 225g and the largest one among the 3 still dominants the other 2. One of them has crazy split fins but still eating well and happy. U may try taking them both out and putting them both back in but I'm pretty sure the 14" will start dominating the 12". Another idea is get a bigger tank. I will be moving my 3 Aros into a 450g soon. Probabely by mid Jan.

Not true. I've had a pair of silvers together for going on 3 years, never has been aggression between them. Almost 5 months ago I added a black aro into the mix, yet to have seen any aggression between the 3 of them.

Then your lucky, I always had aggression between my aros paired up and even a group up to 4 aros. Maybe once they become adult the aggression dies down.

How many different pairs and combos have you had without ever owning any adults?

I never grew aro's to fully adult hood but I did own 2 silvers back then with a Jardini and grew the silvers up to 22-24" and the Jardini up to 19". The 22" silver's jaw broke due to a fight. I tried snapping it back aligned but was too scared to kill it. So I left it and it later got killed by a 30+" RTC.

Read my whole experience in the Catfish RTC/TSN info thread.

I have two silvers myself.. in a 150gallon...

Anyways.. it doesnt look like fin rot to me.. more like fin clip... U can tell that the two arowana dont get along... One of the silver's barbel is cliped.. Means theres attack between the two..

I think theres a possibility their both the same sex.... THIS IS ONLY MY THEORY... because i have two silvers.. and one is thicker body than the other... (Male arowana tends to be bigger because they are moth brewers) There are occasional attacks between the two.... but it wont get too aggressive...

But ya.. if u want to do two arowana.. best chances is to upgrade to a 180 -220 gallon tank..
