Well...keeping with the spirit of the season...so does the "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow...but that's not likely either. :)

The story is big on mystery and short on facts. I could be wrong. This is just my opinion. I never heard that story.

Regardless, they're in the hobby now. I'll see if Jeff can fill in any blanks.

I heard the same story. I tend to believe some of it. Otherwise why would a large number of Rio tepic Beani show up out of no were in all sizes with no generation info on them. They looked very much like what you would expect to pull out of a breeding pond if you left them for 4 years and came back and threw a cast net in.

I thought the ones Rusty brought were baluarte. I got some of the Fry from Dan. Very nice looking fish but also very different then the Rio Tepic the Jeff got in in all different sizes.

At least no one made up some imaginary collection expedition to explain the beani and then turn around and sell them at a premium as wild caught. It is inarguable that the fish are, in fact, beani. So, I suppose it doesn't really matter what the story is to most of us to whom a fish is just a fish.

I agree that the situation is suspiciously fortunate, but the lack of sensationalism lends some credibility to the story (even though the story isn't exactly boring!). Would it have made any difference if some breeder or hobbyist had been keeping these fish, in secret, for years? I don't think so.

Assuming it's true, what a stroke of luck to have found them before the deep freeze this past winter!

How do fish from a breeding pond differ? When these fish first appeared did you feel they were from a breeding pond, or did that realization come after this story emerged.

I enjoy hearing stories metamorphisize as more facts appear.

What are you talking about????? Different name, same lame attitude.

All I ment was that in a breeding pond you would expect to get a large variety of sizes of fish like Jeff had for sale. I never once claimed that a fish looks different from a breeding pond. I have no idea if the story is true or not. It just makes some sense to me.

They were not cheap by any means. They certainly came with a 'premium' price tag, especially considering that they were dragged out of an abandoned pond in Florida and were not flown in from over seas. Last I checked Eddie Martin deals in USdollars, not Euros.

Another tidbit of info: BlueGrass had them for sale at the same time that TUIC 're-introduced' them..... for a fraction of the price. They still do.

FYI, I looked at Eddie's site and he has them listed for $9.80 compared to Jeff's $12.50. While cheaper it isnt a fraction of the price. I'd say the average for 1-2" Beani is $10, they've been out here at LFS for that price. But you're asking for trouble with the small guys (IME). I don't believe he has the bigger one's Jeff has which is what I'm getting.

Nope, its beani and that is what matters. The story by itself has a degree of "wow" factor given the species. Facts, if any, will determine whether the story matters, i.e. "Really?" vs. "Really? Wow!" This was the story that was offered in July. If the story was one of the hypotheticals of a dude breeding them in secret, that story would be interesting as well, again...given the species.

Yes, the current prices are more comparable. I'm referring to the price last spring. They've dropped considerably since then.

Yeah, those prices were crazy but the demand dictated it. No worse than other markups I've seen from other vendors. That's why I've waited till now. $50 for a 5-5.5" Beani is a fair deal in my book. If I saw one at the LFS for that price I'd probably be all over it.
