no an older tank wont make a blind bit of diffrence to the water chemistry or the cycle process
(PS have a look at a nice malawi set up, the marine fish of the tropical world, or how about a south american tank of oscar geophagus and a few other choice beutys. just a thought for ya ive seen way too many people return pirahnas)

Can i ask you may have already mentioned it befor but i can't remember, How many RBP's you planning on getting ? was it 6 to 8 ? And How big is the tank ? I'm only asking because you will possably know already not to over stock your tank and let me show you why here's what happened to one of mine when i over stocked mine

Piranha babies are really fun to watch. Its when they get larger they begin to become dull. Maybe, I got bored with them? Anyways, large piranha are extremely messy eaters. They leave bits of food everwhere! So this makes any type of substrate hard to clean! Even, when I vaccumed their tanks, I would get outbreaks of Hydra. So if you plan to use any substrate I would suggest just enuff to cover the bottom for effect.

I suspect the novelty will wear off for me also, its the same with alot of things, but as long as I keep on top of things and the tank looks nice then that is all I want... no doubt a year from now, i'll want something different! but we'll see....

ive read that plants can grow with less light if you use it in the water and buried a small bag of it next to the plants root.
I have white sand it looks really good but gets dirty when i feed my rbp's feederfish. make sure to put your filter sucker thing a bit higher so no sand gets in it, and wrecks your filter. Sounds like a good project show us some pics when your all done.
