How do you differentiate a PBB from a lap? They really look alike to me when they are juveniles!

How far are you from Japan?
I plan on selling one of these. Not sure how difficult shipping would be though.
:D I'm in the US. so GL shipping them. :)

They are actually a lot easier to ID when they are at 8-12" compare to 18" especially when both have 15-16 finlets.

Yup, agreed.

If the fish doesn't come with a certificate, then I would only buy it if it has 16 finlets. Also the bulk of these guys is much bigger than a Lap of same size.

Then there is the coloration and patterning, hard to see from my photos, but it is intense!

All that said, my guy I get mine from is pretty well known on the Japanese Polypterus "scene", so if he says he has something, pretty much guaranteed it is what he says, and probably a good example too.

Ouh? But if there are only adults available, what should I look out for?

What are the distinct patterns compared to a lap bro? I seriously can't tell! :(

At 8-12 inches a lap will already show a full adult patterns while PBB will still slightly look like a juvenile patterns. If the finlets are more than 16 then it's for sure a PBB but however some lap do have 15-16 finlets but never pass 16 finlets.

Best to get both species and you'll learn to ID them. BY looking at pics it will still confuse you a bit.

King-el, you mentioned that some laps do own 15~16 finlets but I've never seen one with this many finlets before. Many detailed bichir websites states that laps own 12~14 finlets but your theory proves them all wrong. Do you have any pics of such a lap to prove so? Thanks.

It's hard to explain, but if you have seen enough Laps in your life, PBB is pretty easy to spot at Juvi size. Finlet numbers aside, they just stand out much much more.
