New Project, need all the help i can get

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is a link to a way bigger scale of what you are doing. The animals being kept are alittle different but it may give you some ideas.

I don’t know much about snakes but keeping many different aquariums, I would make sure to make the tank easily accessible for maintenance reasons. I’m sure you have thought of this but you don’t want to have to climb into that enclosure every time you need to clean the tank. Maybe make an access door in the back or side, but you would have to take the waterfall into consideration as well. I’ll do some thinking on a waterproof entry and get back to you...

Anyways, this sounds like an awesome idea. Please log your build here if you have the time. We would love to follow along.

That is the exact thread I was thinking of, I remember it standing out in my mind as a kicka$$ tank and exactly what I would do if I could convince the wife to allow me to pawn off the kids on some materials to build it LOL

Exactly. But it can be done in the scale the OP wants, of course.

I just do not know the requirements for these green roughs....

Latin name, please?

How are they with RH?

Opheodrys aestivus

and im sorry im new here, dont have a clue what RH stands for, i come from more of a herpetology background for this and am just at the beginning of my research into the combination of all of these factors. please dont assume im being ignorant about it, i dont plan to even touch a tool to start building until i have all of the information i need.

Relative humidity...

Rough Green Snakes prefer humidity in the range of 55% to 65%.

hmmm, that might actually be a bit low for this enclosure :/ might be back to the drawing board

Why not just basically build a large (whatever size you want) enclosure out of plexiglass sheets (or glass) and cut flaps for easy access, and a hole in the bottom, and just place the whole thing right on top of the aquarium? It will be very lightweight, even with the substrate, branches, etc. You would not need a valve to turn off the water - just unplug the pump ;)
Make sure you have GOOD ventilation. Just because something likes high humidity, doesn't mean less ventilation. (That will only encourage fungi and molds to grow.)
Rough Green Snakes are not as arboreal as you would think - they like the ground. A much better species, which also eats frogs (and anoles) are Philothamnus. I've had some - very easy to keep. CB specimens are best of course.

Exactly.
And pay attention. Even with high humidity gals, it kills them more, with RI's than drier environments.

You will have a tank with warmish water. Your path is doable but areation vents are a must in a system such as you want.

yeah im surprised, the guy at the store seemed to know what he was talking about and i know he knew what i was planning to build because it's based on one of his custom enclosures. seems the rough green isnt going to cut it.

as for your design idea i am definitely still open to all material options for the upper enclosure and a simple plexiglass setup is definitely in the top 3 at this point. it will eventually come down to how much time and money i want to put into it. I just like the idea of a really nice well made wodden trimmed enclosure, but it would be a lot of work and expensive

your suggestion of a snake is interesting, but i dont know if you caught it in the previous posts, i dont want a snake that will go for the frogs and stuffs, the upside of the green was it wouldnt go for anything larger than a quarter.

Oh - I misread you - you DON'T want something that will eat frogs? Well, Green Snakes definitely will snap them up too.
