New Shark Pool

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
BTW I was thicking, why did you glue the filter shut? It's going to be a son of a gun to change filter materials, which is neccessary, esspecially with sharks. Couldn't you just use an O ring?

I didn't glue the barrels shut, just the PVC joints. But there's spray bars in the barrels with end caps glued on. So if anything gets sucked into the pump it will end up getting stuck in the spray bar unless it's small enough to blow through.

So no one knows if nitrate evaporates?

Is this pool really that ghetto? Should I be embarassed? Because I'm happy and my sharks are happy.
People call it ghetto. I've spent over 3500 dollars so far. And it's far from over. I probably could have done it cheaper if I had done more looking around. My protein skimmer is worth more than most entire systems. But I won't go this route.

I need to know about nitrate and evaporation. As well as trace element supplementation for elasmobranch systems in between water changes.

I heard you were looking for me. What can I do for you? I have blacktip reefs as well as other sharks. I also have a source for Banded Guitarfish (Zapteryx exasperata, these guys are really cool looking) and legal sized leopards. Let me know if I can be of assistance. And good luck with your pond!

I think the lords have come down from the hevens for you man :D.

Your pond might look ghetto to some, but it's professional job compared to some others I have seen. Keep it up man, don't be embarrased, most of dem fools aint got the balls to do what you have.

Heres an update with a bunch of pics.

Bought another 150 pounds of Play sand this time. What CRAP!!! I washed one 50 pound bag for atleast 30 minutes and i was still getting MILK, so i just gave up.
What i did was remove the ghetto laundry baskets, Got a 20 inch Plastic Planter, made a 6 inch deep sand bed in the planter, put my live rock and plants/algae in it. Had to get 8 travertine paving stones to sit the planter on, and bore 1" holes all the way around it for flow.

Anyone know if ill have issues with these paving stones? I soaked them and checked the ph and it was 7.4 overnight. Shouldnt be a problem.

I also built a DIY Algae Scrubber in the barrel i was using as a wet/dry. You'll see a pic.

Lastly, i have a question, I have about a 1 inch sand bed throughout the pool, even though its something like 900 pounds of sand. When i was in the pool today, to help kick start the DSB in the planter, i put some old live sand in with the new play sand. When i stirred up some of the sand, the bottom layer of sand was BLACK and smelled of SULFUR. Theres no way this can be anaerobic bacteria, or even gas bubbles with such a shallow sand bed. What IS IT!!???

Thats awesome.
I think it looks good.
All that matters is that you enjoy it, who really cares what other people think.

Looking forward to seeing regular updates on this pool and growth of the sharks!
