another junk thread due to people thinking they already know the answer to the advise they ask for. going back on to a post i read in this mess from the op directed tward another member that has knowledge on gars, op stated- "people like you are the reason mfk has gone down hill". now pause and think about it...............here is the truth, this type of thread is the reason mfk is going down hill. homemade experts wasting all our time by asking pointless questions about things they already seem to know the answer to, even if the true experts chime in with the actual facts on the issues at hand.

now having said that, even if it will only get a "haha i love it" from the troll....i mean op, all them homemade experts need to shut up and listen to what they ask about or better yet just shut up all together. this type of **** gets old. every section, every other thread, same ****.

This thread started as a bit of advice and opinion needed but turned into some pointless 'discussion' because of people who 'keep mfk going' good job to you guys !
Again thanks to all those that actually care and given opinion and advice, it has all been taken in and my gars are eating and happy.
I am a troll? Maybe you should read this thread and see who were the ones that started the 'discussion' or should I say 'kept mfk going'

Well maybe you should read all before flaming at people and calling people a troll.

So was it me who decided to go that far? He decided to "state" that me and some other person was the reason as to why mfk is going down hill fast.

As to the reason why MFK may be going down hill? Probably because people who ask for opinions and advice, are getting flamed. un-called for? Yes.
F1 VET~ this is a forum for all to ask questions and learn, I agree but with the aggression of the replies that come out of no where? I thought we were here to give opinions and advice, not start having a go at some people you don't even know.

Dont just come out of the blue and try sum things up. Have you even bothered to go through every page and read every comment? now pause and think about it...............here is the truth. No.

This thread could have been ended ages ago, but specific people kept on going on and on, pellets this lives that. Like i said why dont someone just start a damm poll as to which is better. As for slime sucking is there evidence out there that EVERY flagtail will suck slime?

Funny as I could say the same to sbuse. I am sure andrewsin read the whole thread and not just decided to snap at one comment he saw in the last page.
I also like how people don't comment on sbuse using swear words and telling me to shut up but decide to snap at any comment made by andrewsin or myself.
Old members obviously mean they know more and can comment with no limits right? :)

No offence to you though HungDang as you actually gave good advice and actually "care" about the fish, I thank you for that.
 
Okay, I'm going to sum up the correct points in this thread:

Gars should be kept on live food until they hit around 8" long (20 cm) because they need to have food available at all times.
  • You will not get optimal growth and health from your young gar if you do not ensure that it has food available at all times.
  • This fact has been proven by people who study gars, so there is no point arguing otherwise.
  • Can you train a gar to accept pellets at such a small size? Yes. Is it ideal to switch them to pellets at a small size? No.
  • Are pellets the preferable staple for gars over 8" long? Yes.
Gars should not be kept with any fishes that can potentially suck on their slime coats (plecos, flagtails, etc.).
  • Will every single one of these fishes suck on another fish's slime coat? No.
  • Are there life-threatening consequences for the gar should one of these fishes suck on its slime coat? Yes.
  • Is it worth the risk? No.

Those two points are correct and are supported by those who study gars, so there's no sense in arguing with something that has been proven time and time again by people who have been doing this for way longer than most of us (including myself and many others who posted in this thread). Many of the arguments presented in this thread are illogical and do not take into account the results of a multitude of threads on these two subjects in the past; some of the illogical arguments are based on lack of experience, some are based on ignorance, and some are based on both. Listen to what experienced people are telling you for a change!
 
I believe the above post sums it up regarding keeping small gars.

I have a couple of questions though, for the UK keepers, since the issue was raised and it is relevant for the discussion: I understand it is illegal in the UK to live feed some animals - at least mamals to... say reptiles.
Is it the same with live feeding fish to other fish?
But it is legal to feed insects or worms to both reptiles (lizards for instance) and fish?

Where is the line drawed in the UK legislation?

Disclaimer: My post is not intended to create a(nother) quarrel or fight; I am really curious because for a few years I have been working on Portuguese legislation on animal (mainly reptile) keeping.
