New tank & cycling parameters

This is almost a "fin level" water change.

You go as low as possible in the tank so that your fish essentially only have lateral movement available.

Condition and temp your new water. I do this almost daily for my grow out. Here is a side by side of a couple weeks apart as well just for fun.

One more question:
Do y'all use the hood light to see better during the water change? I know I have detrius from food & waste so I need to see inside of tank very well. Thanks!

I usually just use the room light and that seems to work but it can sometimes be hard to see waste and debris on darker substrate. If you hover the gravel tube over the substrate it should disrupt any waste for you to see it and suck it up.

Always. My tanks are all setup so the light are on separate strips from filters. Quick flip of a switch and filters are off for water changes but I can see what I'm doing.

Thanks Duane's! I always need the info, as you said"whether I like it or not". You don't have to like something for it to be true. That's a massive beautiful goldfish! (will have to show to the Fishy Five as proof of their potential) How large was it in the beginning?
I just need to get adept with water changes as needed by testing. I really love these guys & do realize their lives are in my hands.
I do want to get a couple more tanks & still get flowerhorn. Do I need a completely "stable" tank (is there such a thing?) to remove it's media to use in a new tank?
I don't want to endanger these or other fish due to ignorance. I was going to get crushed coral for pH. All that info w/pics is great! Could you send in an email (I have no printer where I am)?
I've got a log started (nurses are used to repeating & recording, so no problem) already.

guess what? Those possibly "stunted" goldfish are between 2+ " ( smallest) to 3.5"( largest) as of today: 4/22/2020! They are growing at an astonishing rate & that 55 will be too small way too soon. I found a 300 G stock tank for them to be inside or on patio. Y'all gotta help me! The Fishy Five are indeed a Goldfish Posse now. I DO NOT want to rehome these guys/gals.
The flowerhorn is on the table still, but these guys are gonna have to move before long. Tank is doing great; all this is happening very fast, but is great. Now I gotta figure out how to set up the 300 (mainly trying to see if I can add a viewing window to the stock tank). It's listed even on eBay as Rubberm as I'd 300 gallon stock tank.
If anyone knows of it or looks at it let n e know what you think.

OMG! Hello to all! I'm a true fish fanatic. Up to my elbows in fish, tanks, & water changes. Been a month since I lost Jojo & y'all were all so kind. Healing but sad.
The Fishy Five are huge! That 300G stock tank is imminent. Found a 300G with 6' x 6' x 25" footprint!
Have 2 other tanks cycled. I spend much of the time tending these 3. Enjoying it tremendously. Only sorry haven't been able to talk more. Love & health to all!LovePeaceFish?✌?

Tlindsey! So great to hear from ya! I'm so enjoying this new window in my life. And thanks to everyone, but you've always stepped up to make me feel as though I could do well. Friends like you make me have faith for all of us. Can't relate how much you all mean in my life.

I do want to rehome: had them 1 week & am attached to them already. Also don't know anyone to take them anyway. Also: guess what? I think that tank is about to cycle out! The live bio filters are working great.

Can you tell me this: why is a.p.i. test kit for nitrate so hard to interpret? To me (& I'm not colour blind or otherwise blind), the colour for 40 ppm & 80 ppm are the same. I even looked on web on apifishcare.com & that colour chart. All I know is my colour was not the darkest red. Mine is a medium to light clearing red.
If you can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Used to be a R.N. & did human urine test & read those! Help! (My ph is 7.2--7.4. Ammonia .25--.50 ppm
Nitrite 0. Nitrate is light red so either 40 or 80 ppm.

Update: @ 7 mths. The Fishy Five had grown to 5-7" long! I had them a pond & was setting it up. I was too late; they obviously just got too big too quick.
