New tank setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well if -5 is the coldest you’ve experienced then it would make sense for you to bundle up!! The first -5 day is always cold here too but after you spend a few weeks in -30 you cherish the hot sunny day of -5 and only wear t shirts and a light sweater
You Canadians are insane, when it was 20 degrees I had on 2 pairs of jeans, 4 shirts, a thick jacket, and a thin jacket. What's the hottest it normally gets around there?

I thought I would share this pic with you as I’m sure you take pleasure in knowing I’m much colder than yourself ?

for New Years we took a walk in about -30 down a street called candy cane lane here, all the houses install lights for people to enjoy and you can walk or drive the street. It’s pretty popular here. We waited until everyone else enjoyed it and walked it when we knew not many people would be visiting. By the end of our walk my eyelashes had their own snowballs ?

Well, I do enjoy knowing that I am not alone in my passion for the Arctic environment...not sure you are really that much worse off than we are. We were below -30C all week and hit -40C one evening, although today we got up to a balmy -24C. We do have higher humidity than you generally experience, but for whatever reason the cold has not been accompanied by the kind of high winds we normally have. Cold is easy to dress for if you don't have to fight wind at the same time.

I need to snap a pic of myself after doing a snow plowing/blowing session. My eyebrows, lashes, and beard are normally a solid mass of ice. It covers up so much of my face that I take my best portraits then. :)

The best part is seeing how much tougher a beautiful Canadian blonde is...I mean Niki, not me!...than Esox!

I get dressed up like that when it gets to about -5, which is about as bad as it gets when it's cold over here. I feel like such a girl now, lol.

And well you should!

You've just confirmed it....i'm definitely a girl, lol. But I take great comfort in the fact that fishhead0103666 fishhead0103666 is a bigger girl than me, lol.

Jeans are the worst thing to wear in the cold temperatures, you need some sweatpants or something similar. I was wearing a pair of leggings and sweatpants (it was not enough for an hour and a half walk, my legs were quite cold). I would not even think about venturing out with jeans on, hard pass for me!

In the summer we get fairly high temperatures of plus 30, high 30’s might be as high as I’ve seen, it doesn’t last longer than a few weeks though.

In my area we will have several weeks during the summer when it can be easily +30C or more (85F+). Whether I am working or relaxing, I find the heat much more oppressive than the cold. You can always put on a couple more layers when it's cold...you can only take off so much when it gets hot.

Niki is correct, a warm spell approaching zero now would feel like a heat wave. :)

I wear jeans sometimes in winter...they're flannel lined and are worn over a pair of woolen longjohns...:) But for any sort of activity, cotton anything is the kiss of death in cold weather. It has almost no insulation value, but if/when you exert yourself and perspire even a little, the cotton soaks up sweat, then remains wet because it takes forever to dry. Cold and wet is not the smart combination in sub-zero weather.

Yes I’m originally from out east and the winds and humidity actually add a worsen cold factor, it’s bone chilling and no amount of warmth can take it away for the remainder of the day!

As for the topic of the thread, Niki_up Niki_up , I was wondering if you'd be interested in taking in a rescue Siamese fighting fish ? In all those tanks, there may be a compatible set of tank mates for one to be rescued.

I have no doubt you’d feel the same if you experienced the -30 one week then -5 the next!
You’d question the second pair of socks you decided on, the heavy coat you chose to leave you house in would make you sweat and you’d strip down to your t shirt and open you car window to cool off!!!

Are you near me? I wouldn’t be opposed to taking in a rescue betta, I actually have quite a few tanks that would accommodate a beta and it’s nature.

mom the topic of rescue I was just asked if I could take in a foot long walking catfish and had to decline

esoxlucius esoxlucius actually something that ties into another thread here on MFK during our walk we saw two coyotes hunting in the alley’s. They were so big, fluffy, and healthy looking. No doubt they were far from eating stray cats.

on another walk during the week we saw a coyote hunting a rabbit right on the steeets, the rabbit zipped out in front of us and dodged our dog and right on its tail was the coyote zipping by, the coyote let the rabbit get away when he seen us, we must have acted it. It was quite the site to see!!
