New tank syndrome

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just did another %70/water change today, tomorrow and for the next few days I will do %40 daily water changes. Sound good?

What is your routine when you add prime during wc's? Also how many times do you feed your fish daily?

Pick up a master test kit...If you have the money to shell out for a black aro then there’s no excuse not to have one. You should be testing all you parameters regularly regardless if you have a cycled tank or not. It sounds like you still have some time left to get threw the cycle. Fish in cycling is a role of the dice and is extremely stressful on the fish. Keep up with those water changes and I would only use the prime to lock the ammonia until you get there. I would buy some plants from an established tank that will help get some beneficial bacteria in there immediately. The plants will help consume some ammonia as well.

Well everything seems to be improving. The water is 90% clear and the ammonia levels are dropping. The fish are more active. I'm continuing with daily water changes of 40%, so how long should I keep this up?

Thank you all so much for saving my aquarium!

Keep doing water changes until your ammonia test shows zero or as close to zero as you can get.

You do need to still buy the nitrite and nitrate test kits.

Excellent news! Glad we couple help!

Unfortunately, as deeda stated you should buy the other two tests. we cannot prove any additional help/info on your tank cycle without the other two tests....the only thing we can really say based on what you have is if you test positive for ammonia you should do a water change.

I'm late to the party on this one but I dont like using chemicals at all when cycling. I just recently got back into the hobby after years of keeping fish in the past. Within the last six months I picked up two used tanks and fixed them up, a 72 bowfront and a 100 gallon. The only chemicals I use are dechlor. I think trying to balance with chemical additives causes too many weird swings in your cycling screwing up the entire process. I even add my fish soon after setup. All I do is 50 percent water changes once a week and feed lightly to to start. And add some live easy to keep plants. As long as your not adding too much waste with feeding you will never even notice the cycle. My tanks have been crystal clear from day one and have been going for months now. I'm a firm believer in the more natural method. Add fish, add a couple plants, feed lightly, let things happen on there own. Monitoring 24/7 just makes you overthink the whole process.
