New thread...p14 is very swollen????? Video-

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i'm not even sure rays can have allergic reactions, but i'd think it's possible. if that's the case, remember, the others would be able to eat the same things as him without the allergic reaction, just like 1 human could eat peanuts fine and the other would be hospitalized. don't rule out a food type just because the other rays aren't affected.

allergy was my first thought when i saw the swelling, similar to ppl who get stung by bees, eat shellfish, etc.
when did you first notice the swelling? it would definitely give you a better time frame to look at. was it around the time of the smelt? if swelling was before the prazi, it might just have worsened it, but shouldn't be declared the cause.

it would have been sometime toward the 4th week of august i think. that is about the first time i noticed that he had a thick disc too. However he has had issues with breathing heavy from the day i got him... i blamed it on overfeeding..

I would def say its an infection of some kind.
Will he eat blackworms. If you can get him to eat blackworms, might try soaking some in garlic and feed.
This way you can try home remedy before trying a med..

I know someon here dont believe in garlic as a cure, but it helps with the emmune system in most people and animals, so why not rays...
its worth a try at least. But you have to see if he will eat first. Blackworms are very easy for a ray to eat and most can not resist them.

Worth a shot in my opinion..

I saw this with some CB leos at a lfs near me I was amazed at what I saw and thought for sure they where goners but the next time I came in they where perfectly fine and normal. I have no idea what he might have done to treat them but if you would like I can ask him.

Will do, I was thrown back when I saw the Leos they looked exactly the same as your p14 I will give him a call and see if he has any info right now

I definetly would not just start throwing more drugs at this animal unless you have a firm reason to believe that you are treating for a specific problem!

I went up there and talked with him he didn't recall the problem which really doesn't surprise me because things can get overlooked when you have that many animals to care for. Plus it was like a year ago

Which tells me two things 1. He never medicated and it got better 2. The ray probably never lost its appetite because that would have got his attention.

I wish I had better info for you but that is all I got :(

I can tell you for sure he is religious about his tank cleaning and W/C schedule so that may be your best course of action. Good luck I hope to hear good news soon

Add Epsom Salts(magnesium sulfate) to the water to help it poop.Magnesium is common in water flowing into rivers anyways. And with that, add salt to help the animal regulate its cellular hydration...NO salt is bad for the osmotic cellular regulation... especially when the animal is sick anyhow....believe it or not, a water animal can still get dehydrated when it's sick.

Not saying it's constipated...but a proper balance of minerals in the water can help anyways...
