Hey all I just put a deposit down on a spotted lungfish. He's 12" ill be putting him in a 90gal with 2 big canister filters. What should I use sand or river rock or gravel what would bring his colors out more and what would be safer?here is the pic it is my fish but not my pic the pic belongs to scott at OSA

i like sand. it is easier for the lung to get food. make sure you don't put it with anything you wouldn't mind loosing. you don't need canasters, but they are nice. lungfish turds are massive and can clog them up. dark or orange sands bring out the colors the best, imo.

u have a lungfish scott? dude!! lol..... can u keep them with gar? im also thinking of putting an over flow on this 90 instead of the canisters would work out better if there turds are in cat form lol

i have a south american lung. i keep many species of fishes. i have it with my gars. as ryan and i said the wal you are getting should be kept alone. south american and aussy lungs are more relaxed and you can keep them with other fishes. african lungs are far more aggressive. overflows are nice, i turn sumps pump off when i feed pellets. otherwise they would just go down the drain. lungfish are slow eaters and chew their food up.

by not needing the canisters i meant you could run sponge filters and be fine. they like slower water and you could clean the truds out easy cause they are so large.

That's cool, ill be upgrading my 250 to a 300 gal in a few weeks and I ordered my 600 gal and I get that in a month or so. So I plan on having the lungfish buy him self..now do they keep there colors or do they fade the bigger they get?

Can I use playground sand from lows or homedepo?

A little pool filter sand would be better than playground sand. The stuff from Home Depot is really dirty and fine. PFS is clean and a little courser/less easy to suck into filters, siphons, etc.

The main issue for filtration with lungfish is mechanical. They're really messy eaters and poop big pieces. If you're going to use a canister, you should plan to clean it at least weekly (which will be a PITA).

Better to use a big HOB filter and a big powerhead on a quick filter...and gravel vac frequently.

I kept my big lung in a 150g rubbermaid stock tank...only filtered with a powerhead / quick filter...and used the built in 1 1/4" drain at least weekly to do 90% water changes...

Getting a 50 pound bag of pool filter sand for 8.00 not bad. Need to get a sweet piece of wood and a few plants and. Then get the overflow box and the bring on my lungfish lol
