New to "monster" fish. need help deciding on some.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
gulper cats are mean with feeder fish, so are leaf fish (although boring). but a gulper cat if you can get it as they are voracius feeders capable of eating fish larger than themselves and rainbow snakeheads are not that aggressive i have kept one in a community tank, theyre pretty but thats bout it. brown snakeheads are good with feeders. what would be cool and different is a smiler, gray terrapin. could stay in a 30gal for a good period of time and destroy feeders, no teeth though.

get a spotted gar

hey, the threads old :). id love a gar but they're illegal here. even needlefish are illegal here :irked:... dumb fear of the unknown and how it runs our gov...

I kept a "needlefish" in a 29 gallon tank for a couple years. they look like a gar, but they aren't. petsmart sells them where I live at about 6-8 inches long and they max out at 12 inches. he has a huge mouth and will eat fish wider than his body. If i dropped in a dozen rosy reds he would stuff down 6 of them in under a minute.

people will tell you you can't keep a stiff fish with a max length equall to the tank width, but I kept him with a senegal bicher, two rope fish and a african clawed frog for a long time. the bicher and ropes occupied the bottom and the needlfish the top with no problems. I could not get the needlefish off of feeders, and eventually he could outgrow your setup, but if you're looking for carnage in a 29 that is your set-up.

well like i said (i think. lol), i quit the saltwater hobby. i only have my 30gal left. a 55 is the max for the space i got.

plus all the native marine fish here are only good for dinner plates and grow a million feet, they don't provide excitement like exotic piranhas and stuff haha.

today i came across a rice patty eel though:eek: which is a pretty exiting find for me cause their illegal to sell but it got away X(.

man, exodons man. that's all i can say.

what about a pacu?

welcome to mfk.

i love your answer btw. ;).

but pacu's suck to me. their herbivores being forced to eat meat and grow 2 feet (require 1000+gallons) + their face and teeth remind me of fantasia burrito.
