First off, I'll be honest, I don't know squat about P. Bass and have been looking at pics recently and they look like a very interesting fish to keep. I don't have any monster tanks like a lot of you guys do but I have a 125 gal. that has been sitting in my living room for a while with no water!!! I'm undecided on what I want to put in it.

Will my 125 be big enough for some cichla and if so how many and what kind would you suggest?

BTW, I was planning on a Monster tank in 2009 but, well, THE ECONOMY SUCKS! So I am just gonna do with what I got until I have a few $$$ to spend on a big tank.

First go to the Pbass section here and on othere areas of the web, read and research the fish and their care. The 125 can hold several Pbass although not for life. You could probably get 18-24 months out of your 125 with most species of Pbass if you start with small ones depending on the species.

Posted same time :D

I started my cichla in a 55 then dropped them to an 18 so the O wouldn't eat them...

then they went to the 55 a month or so later..

Then to a 150 then to a 110 150 leaked...

Then to the 250...

Then to a 125 to breed...

Now back to the 250 the current Cichla are about 3 years old from hatch to now... And the Female may work in a 125 for maybe another couple months.. But she would be pushin it hard...

Anywho... You may have 1.5-3 years with 1-3.... But beyond that is really upto the cichla... You will I GUARANTEE feel bad after they get larger to keep them in a 125.. But who knows.. that could spark you to get that monster tank :D

I like buying in 3's

Whatever you do stay away from Cichla Temenis, they grow to be about 90cms/3ft.
Some of the smaller species you can get are Monoculus & Ocellaris usually maxing out in aquaria at 2ft/24".. Another type is Orinocensis which ive heard grow slower than the others so you could keep it longer in your 125..
The smallest species is Intermedia but their very rare and they usually max out at 50-55cms..

Thanks for the quick replies!

I was just curious about them from looking at pics and watching vids on youtube today. I have tons of Geophagus species and they are nice BUT, I'm kinda wanting to maybe try something different, something a little more MONSTER!

My wife wants to fill the 125 with fish from the "FISH TRUCK". Largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, etc. but I like the P bass more.

What bottom dweller would go good with about 3 P bass???

well cichla are about as monster as your going to get if you ask me.. they are beasts... quick tip make sure you keep your water at 87+ when cichla get larger they turn into beautiful fish

feeding:almost anything with training.but when young, best to feed feeders until they reach about 6 inches.then begin the training.
temperature:i always keep my temp at around 30 degrees celcius.never had any disease issues.
growth:depending on species.im guessing you'll most likely be getting mono/ocell,so about 1 inch per month.orinos slower, temensis and pinima faster.monos/ocells hit about 2 feet, rarely more.orinos slightly bigger, but slower growers, tems and pinima get to 3 feet and grow FAST.
tankmates:anything not overly aggressive and can keep up with cichla growth.
you can do congicus or endli endli bichirs, catfish im not too sure, wolf fish and some others.

your tank should be fine for mono/ocell for maybe 2 years depending on feeding and water changes etc.
orinos maybe longer.
temensis maybe 1.5 years or so.

Im guessing you watched dieselmacks videos on youtube, right?? his videos will get anyone who watches them on Cichla and that aint a lie lol..

You can put bichirs and plecos with them, and even smaller cats like lima shovel nose, striped Raphael cats, pictus cats etc..
