New to Polypterus - Substrate Advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm starting to hate my black substrate... Looks cool in the tank but the polys don't benefit from it, and it's impossible to get a good pic
maybe throw some white in there ;). That's what I did. Or you could always go garnet. Sometimes adding some more green plants or colorful rocks can help. I personally love the black, but can see what you mean with the polys.

I definitely would, but they'll be moved to a new tank with floramax within a week or two. My fish room is in transition, everyone is getting an upgrade so I'm sorta starting over with their setups. excited to see my polys in a new setup

I believe the ornate is female. Female bichirs tend to grow larger and get more massive.

I got my garnet from this guy garnetdave@sbcglobal.net 60$ per 50lbs but gonna go for the barton garnet sand itsuch cheaper.

You could email lisa from barton LCruz@barton.com she was able to find me a sherman williams that carry the red garnet.

Oooo that is exciting. Makes sense. I think my ornate (Benny) is a female.....but I don't want to believe it cause I call Benny a "him" all the time lol. Plus I hear the females can be vicious?

Sherwin Williams carries sand? There's like 3 in my town. Maybe I'll email her.
