i have read and taken in to account everything you guys have said im in the process of buying a custom wider 88g tank this weekend now do you guys think that it will be enough room for the two of them i know we started this thread off bad but i have thought about it alot last night and im going to pony up to it and buy the biggest (cheapest) tank i can afford im going to get the test strips and the supplies to treat the water of nitrogen cycle and other problems and the HITH problems if they ever come so now all i need is if i need it bigger or smaler?

One thing with your JD/Oscar combo. Without much warning either could become rather territorial or aggressive and make life misserable for the other. I would recommend getting a tank divider to have on hand incase this were to happen. Also fish that are raised together from young do not always get along when they are older. If you do get them into a proper size tank you shouldn't have much of a problem of them living together.

The 88G you mentioned will do fine. Just to let you know, a 75G is the minimum for a full grown oscar. Keep in mind an oscar reaches a foot in a year on average. Your Jack Dempsey will most likely top out at 8-9".

would of thought big enough for them both when fully grown if you keep an eye on the nitrates and it's filtered properly. the O will grow quicker than you'd belive, mine is doing about 1.5 inches a month in growth.

Although you chose a painful path to get there I think you look like you are finally headed in the right direction. Personally I would feel bad keeping feeder fish in a ten gallon. Ive never even owned one. The 88 gal sounds like a good plan but make sure to do your homework this time. You MUST know the nitrogen cycle upside down and backwards and you MUST complete it before adding ONE fish at a time. That is if you want to provide livable conditions for these wonderful fish. Another rule with Oscars is mega filtration. Run double if not more the recommended filtration. Realize that even if the tank is cheap you still need:

Heaters
Substrate
Power Filters
Replacement filters
Gravel Vac
Deco
*Stand
*Canopy
*Lights
Thermometer
Food (buy in bulk for that Oscar)
Test Kit
QT Tank fully set up (recommended)
Meds
Nets
Buckets (good quality buckets are a god send but generally arnt free)
And so many more little and large items that you could not even imagine

* = May come with tank

And one last thing, the "biggest (cheapest) tank" is not the tank you will want when your replacing everything in your living room.

well i have the food thants not a problem and i have a big net (for now) amd the jack and my o are already fighting im debatind on getting rid of them i havent decided yet my g/f wants fish that we can have and not worry about them killing them selves and i found another tank that was 70g that was made of 1/2 inch thick glass i havent really decided on what tank i want but do you guys know of any cool fish that i would like (i like fish that dont eat just plain old gold fish food i like live food myself) that my girl could have some other flashy fish as well help me out here i dont know what to do im lost right now what do u think?
