Yes only males hold fry so every time they catch a aro if it's female with no fry they throw it back
So why waste the catch and put the female in a pond the catch amount must be 50% male 50% female so what's the problem
Also if they caught a male and found fry like this what do you think they do take the fry and throw him back and hope they get lucky and find another male holding fry like this or keep that male pout him in a pond and hope he continues to produce fry like this
If this aro is as rare as you say throwing the male back that produced the the fry would be crazy it would be like throwing away a lottery ticket before you cashed it
As for feeding the pond would be connected to the main river allowing other feeder fish to enter the pond and has far as I know insects are everywhere
