I can't put my goldfish in a plastic tub. I'm too busy to do 100% water changes every day.
What I plan on doing is getting a sponge filter from someone's tank that is already up and running with the correct bacteria. Squeezing it into a cup and dumping that beneficial bacteria right into my tank.

I will look into getting that tank buddies jungle antiparasite treatment.
Is that absolutely necessary even if no parasites like flukes and anchorworms, arent present on my fish?
Almost 100% of goldfish that come from farms are harboring @ minimum gill flukes. It is common practice to use Praziquantel as a prophylactic treatment for goldfish in quarantine. The Jungle Tabs is the easiest to have access to, but if you could find plain Praziquantel (sold as PraziPro by Hikari, or as a dog wormer, but buying from a vet, costs like $60 for one 23mg tab, so not very economical) that would be better, but probably unrealistic in your situation.

Alright. thanks for that bit of info. i'll pick up the jungle tabs.
That goes in AFTER the tank cycles correct?

I have a bit of salt in there right now to help keep bacteria out of the red spot one fish has and to help reduce stress.

Yes, I wouldn't treat for flukes until the tank has cycled. Treating with meds + undergoing a cycle may prove too stressful for the fish.

I'll keep this thread updated.

the goldfish with the split fin has completely healed already.
The fin grew back together very fast.

the other still has the same red spot as in the youtube video I linked.
hasn't grown or gotten better.

It's good to have salt in the water like you do, it helps ease osmoregulation, and increases production of slime coat.

Do you think the woman with goldfish would just let you borrow the sponge filter itself, and return it when you have your filter cycled? Maybe offer to pay to "rent" it, or leave something there as collateral?

She might. I don't even know her, I've never talked to her before.

I heard of her through a family member because that is where he bought his daughter's fish, instead of driving 45 min like I did lol.

How would that work If I did that though?
I have an aquaclear 20 filter, a relatively small filter with a small sponge.

The sponge's she has are for sure larger and won't fit in my filter.

If she has a sponge filter, you would put the whole thing in the tank, and let that work on your tank, while also running the AquaClear.

Also, since you do have an aquaclear, I would recommend cutting the sponge in half lengthwise like this |----| and just use half the sponge, and buy more of that biomax stuff to put in the filter, especially since you have two goldfish in there. If you want me to explain the reasoning behind this, just ask and I can clarify. Or you could just take my word for it (it's what I do, and everyone else I know that runs AC's.)

You may also ask her if she has some biomedia you can borrow. I got some lava rocks, and a few of the biomax things from some people I know, and put that into the filter inside the mesh that comes with the filter. That may be easier for you to do, instead of asking for a sponge filter.

Alright. I'll ask first if I can just buy a used sponge off of her from her filters.

or atleast borrow one.

I'd rather buy it off on her because I can't borrow it and cut it up to fit my filter :X

My friend's sister also has a goldfish tank with some big goldfish. So I might ask there for a used sponge too.

I undetstand the biomax and why you are recommending more. Because that is where the beneficial bacteria colonizes, in the microscopic holes in the biomax. the more of this I have, the better the filter can keep up with the waste producing goldfish.

That's right. At first I didn't understand why taking some of the sponge out was necessary. I mean, it has many holes for bacteria to grow too, right? Well, apparently, the sponge has a little bit of area, but mainly it just traps crud, and eventually leads to high nitrAtes. I learned this the hard way!

Bummer.

well my media is arranged as such.
Bottom; 20 sponge
Middle; 20 carbon
Top; 20 biomaxx

I have two more addition sponges and carbon, each.
because I bought a 3 pack of those.

Biomaxx was more expensive per pack, so I only got one.
