what percent of water changes?

and there is a lady near me (I don't know her) but she has lots of goldfish, healthy I suppose.
Show I go ask her if she can squeeze one of her sponges from the filter into a cup for me to pour in my tank and give the cycling a big kick start?

Oooohhh...I wonder if the lady is a member of a goldfish forum I also mod. LOL!

Ask for a spare established sponge. I'm sure she would spare you one if she heard your plight about the goldfish. Ask her as well if she treats her goldfish with prazi. You would still need to treat yours with prazi anyway right after you're done with cycling as the goldfish are too prone to flukes.

If she lives in newfoundland canada it could be her.

Would melafix treat it for flukes?

Unfortunately no. You need prazi for that. Melafix will help with injuries but will not help with parasites. Flukes are very sturdy so you need prazi on this one. Prazi is very mild though so you don't have to worry about it messing with your beneficial bacteria.

alright. Well ill look at walmart.
Is there any equivalent to it that walmart would have? like a different name of the same stuff?

Would aquarium salt help at all either?

Prazipro is the name. Any praziquantel-based meds will do. Just make sure it's pure prazi. Maybe check Goldfish Utopia online if they have it or Pet Mountain.

Here's one.

Get aquarium salt as a precaution.

As for aquarium salt.
I was reading an article online that said non-iodized table salt would work fine for aquarium salt.
Just mix a cup of water with the appropriate amount of salt, and gently pour it in the tank.

Will that work?

Yep. You do need to dissolve it. Here's an article on quarantining fish.

Alright thanks for that.

Here is a yahoo quote. He uses iodized salt.
Tell me if you think it will be okay with goldfish. And what is the measurment per gallon for it.

"When I add salt to a freshwater aquarium for certain fish or to heal wounds, etc., I use regular table salt with the iodine in it. I used to use non-iodized salt until a well known local breeder here in Cleveland told me there is nothing to worry about having the iodine in the salt. He explained to me that there are many, many trace elements in the water they live in, in the wild and iodine is one of them. He said he uses it all the time. Much cheaper than aquarium salt.

Aquarium salt has many of these trace elements added in and is better in the long run, but using table salt is not a problem. As long as you are doing your weekly partial water changes, you are putting in trace elements every week (unless you use purified or distilled water, that's a big no-no).
