Newbie to Poly species

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My tank is overcrowded but I keep up on maintenance so it works. I have a 100 gallon with a 75 gallon HOB, 2x magnum 350s inline with the 2 intakes with intake sponges, the 1st 350 is filled with polyfil and the 2nd 350 with a filter sleeve and bio-media. I replace sponges and polyfil every 4-5 days and do a 60-75% water change every 4-5 days. It was less but my 3x 10-12" plecos shredded my moss and ate all my frogbit

Oh I also just found out I'm getting a rescue albino sen from my friend that runs the only fish rescue in texas. Basically anything oddball she calls me =) It is good to have friends

S Setherson I started the upper jaw route but eventually gave in and went lower. Something just so prehistoric and primitive compared to the upper jaw...

Keep us updated as you get the fish!

Plus 1

all polys are nice but lower jaws are definitely cooler. Especially when they get thicker than a childs arm. Very impressive fish when large.

I use an ac110 with an internal filter that's turned upside down for skimming. This is on a 70 gallon.

Good idea turning the internal upside down. Never thought about that

Simple like this, stuffed with floss and keeps it Squeeky clean

Just trying to run past you guys the equipment I had in mind for the bichir tank. Only thing I have never used before are canister filters, but the rest I am familiar with for the most part.

The tank is a aqueon 125g set that is 72W x 18L x 22H saw it for a decent price and couldn't resist.

Substrate: not sure, haven't decided on whether it will be a partially planted tank or not. Heard crushed quarts, garnet, or most sand works well though. Not the biggest fan of the bare bottom look.
Filter: Fluval FX6
Heaters: Eheim Jager TreTemp Aquarium Heater 300W x 2
Lighting: Fluval fresh & plant 2.0 full spectrum performance LED (36-48 in) x 2 + LED wifi module
Power strip: Coralife digital power center or a spare surge protector I have laying around
Autodoser: Jebao programmable auto dosing pump DP-4
Aquarium monitor: not sure of which yet, but something to detect temp, ph, and other basic water chemistry would be nice

Let me know what you guys think of the proposed list. Also if you want to share what works for you or have some opinions on what works best, anything is appreciated.

Forgot to ask something. I know bichirs are mostly nocturnal, but is there anything else I should keep in mind to help accommodate them better?

Nice tank man

Garnet sand would look great if you can find it.

Did you purchase the filtration yet ?

Thank you, and nope haven't bought a thing yet. Was just trying to see if I am going in the right direction of having the proper equipment. Its my first large tank and first time with "monster" fishys so just a bit unsure if they require special equipment or treatment.
