Bubble traps aren't necessary in SW. Their main purpose is to prevent stray micro bubbles from a protein skimmer from reaching the display tank...but I digress.
Its funny how one of the hobby's main criticisms of Fluval canisters, for example, is their flawed design that allows water to bypass the media, yet here we are advocating just that

There is no way to bypass media in a sump....unless you build a wall and a moat around the media....

Huh?? Yeah..... I'll add 10 neon tetras to my empty 1,000 gallon....... I'll just add some plants and skip the sump all together.........or did you mean heaviest stocked tanks??? if so, this is TOTAL BULL. Please show me pics of YOUR JDM set-up with the simple sock, media bag and return pump design. In a heavily stocked tank do you know how fast a sock would get clogged up??? .... in less than a day!!
I am calling those out who agree this simple design will work on heavily stocked or JDM style tanks..... I want to see pics of YOUR set-ups...... not some video from Youtube where you really don't know what type of filtration they are running.
Everyone keeps mentioning this design to baffles...... how about a wet/dry with no baffles or a moving K3 with no baffles?? You can't possibly tell me the design here is an equal to those....BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT!!
I agree..... for newbies & even seasoned fish keepers...... the simple design can & will work for light to medium loads BUT I happen to know many newbies who want monster fish and monster set-ups from the get go...... again... this is nowhere close to an optimal filtration design for heavily stocked/JDM applications......
Personally for heavily stocked tanks, I use a moving bed or wet/dry along with as many pathos I can fit in a second sump/refugium. ..... not the only way..... but works well.....
Majority of my fun in this hobby is making complicated setups. If you want to argue efficiency, I believe dimishing returns definitely apply but at the same time I would not use the simple setup posted here for my 3 adult rays. I wouldn't sleep at night, either worrying about my pets water quality or due to maintenance, you can choose.
And yet again, the thread has been derailed into a pissing contest about some pseudo science behind sump design being a" make or break" factor in the average aquarium.
OP didn't start this thread to get armchair commentary on what constitutes a "proper" sump design. Seriously, beating this dead horse completly kills the example of the original post. "Newbs" are going to read this thread and leave even more confused...with nothing but a few clever remarks to reference later.
