Have a look at koiphen forum if you haven't already. Several members there have done what you intend to do.

At the heart of the nexus is a static bed for easy clean mechanical followed by a moving bed of K1. A lot of people (including myself) use 2 separate barrels to accomplish the same thing.

Outstanding thread; very interesting! Looking forward to updates.

The cheapskate DIY-er in me is now wondering how I can build one of these out of Rubbermaid bins and garbage cans...

How is the mechanical media cleaned? I see the waste valve to drain sediment, but the actual media must become steadily more and more clogged as time passes. Is that inner chamber easily removed and just pressure-washed to clean, or does the media need to be removed and washed separately?

The conversion that I'm doing is not unique. It is a kit that Nexus put out as a product improvement for their Model 310 with full instructions.
People have complained that the center mechanical chamber is too close to the bottom making it difficult to wash. They've raised stainless steel chamber off the bottom allowing full access underneath and introduced K1 micro to trap more particles.

This looks like a very easy filter to maintain. That and applying this to fish other than Koi is my main goal.

Stainless steel chamber has no bottom and is bolted to the bottom of the vortex settling chamber.


Half the waste disposal hole is obstructed and waste is trapped inside the mechanical chamber.

When installed the top will be at the same level as the original. You can see how much shorter the 320 is which pulls it off the bottom of the settling chamber.

Too hot, too tired, too lazy, too old.....when I was younger, I can knock this out in one day.....not anymore.
Going to go with this 1/4 hp I got laying around. Very low amp. A little too much flow for this filter but we'll see.
Got the 4" returned done. Hope to have the rest of the plumbing done tomorrow.
Neighbor's going to love the view of my filter.

Everything went well on the startup.
Water is pumped from the pond into the filter then gravity return back.
Media needs time to soak. Lots of air in the K1 micro. Hope it seeds fast.

I incorporated a 3" diameter stand pipe for the return. This appears to be a good match for the pump flow rate. No gurgling or sucking of air.
Water level is still trying to stabilize so you can hear a few burps in the video. I'm going to make adjustment and fine tune it in the following weeks as it matures.
