Nitrates are good lmao

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally dose nitrates in 3 of my tanks. My reef tanks run at 10ppm up to 50ppm. I don’t think I would allow them to go much higher than 50.

Guy has a huge following here in SW FL. He used to own an aquarium shop in Venice FL. Went out of business...go figure. He is an odd duck to say the least. Met him one time while I was out collecting native Killifish. Very personable guy and I hope his methods work for him but I will not be going down that worm hole anytime soon.

Lol ya his followers are nuts, I’ve tried to explain a few flaws in what he’s saying, and they come at me saying my tanks are gonna fail cuz I’m interfering with nature I’ve had a few salt tanks that were self sustaining, but they were full of live rock that had a ton of hitchhikers and 90% inverts with one or two fish

You can achieve a very-low water change schedule aquarium. However, they're not aesthically pleasing as they just look like aquatic gardens with a few small fish. I've seen DWSDarius pull it off once but the aquarium was a literal plant jungle with only 1 or 2 small gouramis in it.

Most of this guys tanks don’t look good to me, 6-7” of dirt with more plants than water

....did he open up another one?.....it looks like he is in a shop in the video.

Didn't watch the video. But I kno who he is. He's pretty popular in the planted tank community. And some of u are to quick to judge just because u were taught a certain way for so long so if someone don't follow your method u think they are wrong. Using dirt for your tank is actually great for planted tanks. It's a big thing in the planted community cuz it works. Nitrates are good for plants. This forum isn't big on plants so I can see all the hate.

This forum mostly have bare bottom or just substrate so yes nitrate is bad. But nitrates are good for plants. All the dirt substrates and plants acts as a eco system for the tank. Look up walstad method. U don't even need to do waterchange or few times a year. I'm sure OP and others are laughing at that idea.

If your tank is balanced and has its own eco system. Any dead leaves or fish the eco system of the tank will take care of it. Cuz it acts like nature. I used to be big in planted tank and my tank was always clear and I do water change once a month. All that substrates and plants took care of everything.

There is a reason why he has many followers

From what I’ve got, he thinks his way is the only way regardless of style of tank, he tried to say his way would work for my rift tank
Yes , if you’re into planted tanks, it could work, but telling people to go get dirt from a local pond or run off ditch is dumb

Some people just have to swim against the current, sad he picked this current to swim against. How many fish he is helping to kill off needlessly........
lol

This clarifies it a bit more. If someone's going for a planted tank then nitrates can be beneficial as it acts as fertilizer for the plants. However, I also agree with others that the guy in the video should clarify that his method is only for planted tanks. In a non-planted tank, his approach could be disastrous.
