Yeah it is good that you watch out for the nitrate levels but to keep it lower you maybe want to buy another filter. CORRECT MY SPELLING OR Else :)

Standard filters don't remove nitrate, good old fashioned water changes are your best bet in that department.
Some species are more sensitive to nitrates than others, oscars for example seem to develop HITH when exposed to prolonged high nitrates...anything above 20ppm. For others their tolerance is higher or lower but with all species the less there are the better, I try to keep mine below 20ppm.

lol noonein2 just seems to be postin random comments all over mfk?

what is a denitrator. i can guess removes nitrates but never seen a denitrator

i try to keep my nitrates at 20ppm or less-that is with weekly 50 percent waterchanges on my tanks

its a filter using anoxic bacteria and a bio avaiable carbon source to break down the nitrates releasing nitrogen gas

I dont think Oscars are that sensitive... I have one who is 11 inches and no HITH and I'm pretty sure my nitrates have been higher than 20 ppm for extended periods of time as well. I tested my water and it said 0 nitrates I think which was weird because it's well water.... I ama gonna keep a gooda eye a on it.

Hey, do you realize that by saying 'correct my spelling or else' you are actually telling people you want them to correct your spelling, right?

And another filter won't lower the nitrate.

for some reason i can keep my nitrates at 5 ppm with the stock i have in my 101 gal tank... the only thing i can think of on why mine are so low is i do 30% WC every sunday and my eheim pro II's.... well good luck

Please have a look at my thread concerning Nitrates and the use of house plants.

Philodendron is the name and nitrates are the game!
I have used this type of house plant very successfully. I actually have to trim the roots and stems because they grow so well.
Respectfully,
FireMedic.
