I dont think Oscars are that sensitive... I have one who is 11 inches and no HITH and I'm pretty sure my nitrates have been higher than 20 ppm for extended periods of time as well. I tested my water and it said 0 nitrates I think which was weird because it's well water.... I ama gonna keep a gooda eye a on it.

I'm not saying that every oscar exposed to high nitrates will develop HITH, just saying there is a link between the two. Kinda like how you could smoke your entire life and not develop lung cancer, that dosen't mean smoking dosen't cause it. Its generally agreed upon that high nitrates or a poor diet (or both) are the leading causes of HITH in oscars.

It is depending on the fish, you have to remember that in the wild most fish have to exposure to nitrates at all and that it is a poison. Many studies have been done on the subject and some fishes have an even lower tolerance than 20-40ppm. Its about 11:00 PM here and I have work in the morning so I don't have time to dig up said studies but if anyone is interested I'll certainly do it tomorrow.
