Mine can't usually be traced higher than 20PPM Devon, more water changes :)

I just did a 100% water change over 2 days. I AM BEFUDLED!

Plants are a no go, my fish just tear em up.

Please have a look at my thread concerning Nitrates and the use of house plants.

Philodendron is the name and nitrates are the game!
I have used this type of house plant very successfully. I actually have to trim the roots and stems because they grow so well.

FireMedic.

I dont see what your trying to describe with words.. What are you doing with the plants? Where are you putting them, what kind, how?

How much nitrate is in your tap water? Hopefully none.

ya it tested 0

I have a sump set up next to my main tank. The water from the tank enters a wet-dry trickle filter then passes through the plants. Then the water is heated and pumped back into the main tank.

The species is Philodendron, very common house plant.

I just checked my notes: with same amount of feedings and same volume, three stingrays, it takes 43 days for the Nitrates to test greater then 8ppm.
Respectfully,
FireMedic.

What test kit are you using because my api test kit only goes by readings like 5ppm, 10ppm, 20ppm, 40ppm, 80ppm and 100pm. I would like to use a nitrate test kit that would give me exact readings.

I usually stay around 20-40ppm.
But I also use this type of remover media in my main ehiem canister,

It is just a safety net because really, only water changes remove nitrate.
But this media drops levels by 10-15ppm and works nicely.
I use two bags rated for 100gal in my 75gal tank.

i just tested my nitrayes with a fmaster test kit and it read 0ppm? is this right. i dont have the instructions any more but there are two bottles for nitrates.#1 and # 2. #1 is add 10 dropps and then it turns piss yellow for 0ppm. the sencond is add ten but the water in the vial stays clear so i really dont know if im doing this right. can you help. everyone hear has at least som nitrates. is it possible to have none?

Thats odd. Is your tank more than 2 weeks old?
