A quote from a famous hobbyist with a little twist of my own!!! Credit goes to original poster!!! LOL

Re:stingrays

I always laugh when people actually try to make money and keep them as a hobby. Wouldn't take a Carted Accountant to figure out that doesn't work. When your known in every neighborhood you have lived in for the past 10-12 years as a potential drug house (water and power usage) and known at superstore as the guy who literally buys every bag of shelled shrimp they get in constantly, it doesn't matter what you sell them for in the end... you still lose!

perhaps its because people forget that the point of a forum is so people can ask questions but when new people or inexperienced people ask questions they tend to get flamed or shot down so dont bother asking anymore or just dont bother with forums at all.

if you owned a fish shop and complained that everyone came in asking for the same things all the time when they could find them elsewhere just as easily im sure you would soon see the error of your ways.

ie
customer : ... oooh thats a really nice fish , can i keep it in my 2ft tank ?
shopkeeper : omg another bloody idiot, why dont you go to the library and read a book . you shouldnt even be keeping fish ! :D

or the shopkeeper could politley point the customer in the right direction get him to put a deposit on a bigger tank and get repeat business.

all the new forum customers are scared off or afraid of asking questions its no wonder its the same people posting or the not posting as the case may be as they have already asked their questions.

maybe admin should put a big sign at the top of the forum that says " be polite - YOU choose the questions you answer "

I also think people dont say everything they want to for fear of being flamed. i know ive got a few pics ive thought ... shall i ? nah they will just flame :D

Spot on .coulnt agree more

Rays are NOT a beginners fish.
They are an 'advanced aquarist' animal.
One of the problems is that bad advice and good advice often are given the same weight. This is frustrating for anyone who would see it 'done right'.
Often its not the questions that are a problem ( even the repeat most basic ones) but the answers. Things like faulty opinions from people who have not actually kept a ray, or don't know basic water chemistry...
Then there are some who insist on being as dumb as they can instead of progressing.
So...the knowledgeable folks tend to move on , not because they are tired of basic questions, but more because they get tired of struggling against all the badly thought out replies.....and the never-ending stream of bad advice perpetuates itself at every opportunity.

Fish get together would be fun, Everyone can come visit me anytime but not too many people are local.
Agree would be great if we could get some more rays over here, I think more people have gotten into them so not too many are moving around right now as people purchased and keep. And some US places are just not communicating with people I have messaged one place about 10 times and they don't get back to me with anything seriously.

2 questions since we seem to have a lot of ray guys in here...

who is going to the monster convention in september?

How hard is it to import rays from europe? You uk guys have tins of nice pearls and they are few and far between in the us....

It has nothing to do with flaming but more to do with the majority of people have their collection in place and don't need their hands held anymore so they tend to ask less questions or do fewer updates!!! Only so many ways you can update on the same stingrays you have had for 5 years plus.
If you can't learn the works of this site or are able to use search function and the basics of computers then maybe you shouldn't be looking after rays. There is a difference between asking questions, stupidity and being down right lazy.Maybe, SEARCH the stickies and doing some research first and then when all has been exhausted and you can't find the information then ask the question. Do teachers give you the answers to the test before hand? I am pretty sure these aren't children that are owning rays unless they have rich parents and I am pretty sure I didn't sign up here to babysit and hold hands.
Rays aren't cheap and shouldn't be owned by the non experienced fish keepers as they are a long term commitment and require more care. It's not like you can change them out each month like a cichlid when you get bored of them.

Maybe they should have an advanced ray keeper section only and the children scared to be flamed section.
Thanks I am done my rant now!

Perfect example of why beginner ray keepers don't like to ask questions. Teachers do give the answers to the test while they are TEACHING the material and answering questions about the material they just talked about.

While I nominate you for teacher of the "YEAR" and you can answer all the children's questions.

This place is more like a library with tons of info on every topic you will ever need to look for on the fish keeping hobby. People need to just search a bit before you ask that question that has already been covered.

On a side note I see you got into rays and you said you did the research before hand. Probably at the library!!I assume that wasn't to hard for you so why can't everyone else do the same.

Let's start by posting threads with some new topics or post some pictures.

This is a perfect example of a great topic. I have wondered this for some time. Maybe you should start a new thread. :)

A lot of it has to do with summer rolling around, people are not cooped up indoors as much. For me I just started a reef tank project so I have spent most of my "online time" researching that.

Ill be waiting for my ticket in my email box send when you can.

didyasis .. fly out for the weekend,
