Noob to snakes and I have questions.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is freaking AWESOME if that is the case!!!

Most everything at the lfs is 100-250.00 Of nothing that I want or would be keeping for long term..

Plus with Don and Collette... Well they are literally 5 miles from my house and everyone now has said only good things about them. Thanks for the new insight!!

You dont plan on keeping the snake long term?

No nothing at the lfs is nice enough that he would want to keep it, keep it long term.. ;)

Did you even read? I said Tongue33 should go with what HE want, not the child since he will end up taking care of it all the time. Anyway, he already settled on a Ball Python so why bother arguing anymore?

By the way, a lot of hobbyists I know personally have gotten Green Tree Pythons, Tree Boas and White-Lipped Pythons for their kids (5-12 years range). All of those are known to be extremely defensive. Now you can't tell them that it is wrong to give them those snakes. Why? The parents would end up taking care of it anyway until the kid got enough experience to do it on their own. Hell, a good friend of mine got his 6-years old a Amazon Tree Boa a few years back, and the kid is now 12 and does maintenance and feeding by himself.

Really, when the kid is that young, it doesn't really matter what they have as long the parents can take care of it. However isnce Tongue33 already picked Ball Pythons, then this whole debate is now pointless.

Of course I read, did you read Dave?
Yes, obviously the adults are going to be caring for it, BUT, and its abig but so instead of getting all defensive lad just calm down..an adult carpet python for a 5 yr old to handle is not right. And a very silly reccomendation.

If the snake was soley for the adult, then sure, carpet python works but its not. This snake is FOR THE CHILD not the adult, so yes, the adult will have to feed, yes the adult will have to do the maintance but for a 5 year old? You better believe if I had a carpet python it wouldn't be going near my nephew. And I'm not saying its cause theyre nasty, theyre not, but they are generally quite nippyy and its the sheer size that is so unsuitable for a pet for a 5 year old..not matter whos doing the maintance. so it will have to match BOTH. And sorry, but carpet python and 5 yr old child shouldn't be used in the same sentence...
Get off your high horse and calm down.
After all, I'm the one talking about the safety issue here, I'm not the one making rediculous reccomendations of large pythons for small children..

Really? Is that so?
Burmese python anyone?

I dread to think whats next out of your mouth for a young child, thats why I'm carrying on the debate.

JD and Kioka, the OP has essentially decided what direction they're gonna take and thus, have met the objective of the thread. If you two want to carry on further, please take it to PM because its getting old for the rest of us.

Speak for yourself.:D

Get a spitting cobra lololololololololol

All stupidity aside, Get a a ball python. THey may occasionally go on hunger strikes, but they are a docile, relatively small boid with nice personality for kids.

You finally made your mind up! Amazing!

With your luck it will get out of its cage and become fish food!

Post pics when you get the little guy.

Balls are nice here's my girl. She's only thought about striking once and she fell to the floor of her cage before hand so I can't say I blame her.
